Citizens will appeal to the Minister of Tourism and the Environment to explain the reasons for the abandonment of the Marchamalo salt mines (20/03/2018)

Luis Fernández: "It has been almost a year and a half since the Citizens initiative was approved for the recovery and protection of the salt mines and the regional government has not done anything, so the environment continues to deteriorate"

Ciudadanos has registered an initiative in the Regional Assembly in which it has requested Javier Celdrán, Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Environment, to explain the reasons why it has not carried out the actions related to the Marchamalo salt mines included in the Plan of Integral Management of the Protected Spaces of the Mar Menor.

Luis Fernandez, regional deputy of Citizens, has denounced that it has been almost a year and a half since an initiative of Citizens in the Regional Assembly was approved for the recovery, protection and enhancement of the Marchamalo salt flats "and the regional government has not It has done absolutely nothing, so the salinas continue to be abandoned and the environment continues to deteriorate, to the point that some areas have become a dunghill. "

In this sense, Fernandez has stated that "when this situation is reached it is necessary that the Minister of Tourism and the Environment explain to us why during this time no measures have been adopted for the protection and recovery of flora and fauna because the image offered by the Surrounding both the neighbors and tourists who will visit the area during the Easter season is deplorable. "

"Also, given that part of the environment is private, we met with the owners who transferred their intention to reach an agreement with the administration, in order to achieve the recovery of the environment as soon as possible," added Fernandez.

The deputy of the orange formation considers it essential to immediately elaborate and execute a Comprehensive Plan for the Protection and Recovery of the Salinas "now that it is still possible, and try to avoid the death of this natural jewel, a situation to which the regional Government is contributing with his laziness and sloppiness.

We do not understand why measures similar to those that were made at the time were not taken to protect the salt pans of San Pedro del Pinatar that are located at the other end of the Mar Menor. "

For his part, the spokesman for Citizens in Cartagena, Manuel Padín, recalled that the initiative promoted by Cs contemplated that a system be established to ensure the completion of the tasks and tasks of the salinas, removal of salt and water intake , by transfer of the economic exploitation of the same or by any alternative means.

In addition, the orange formation requested that the necessary measures be taken for the protection and recovery of the fauna and flora existing in the salt mines and their surroundings, as well as the pertinent measures for the reintroduction of the autochthonous species already disappeared.

The proposal of Cs also required a reform of the existing buildings and their use as auxiliary facilities of the area for educational, tourism, informative and research purposes in order to value the natural wealth of the area.

Manuel Padín recalled that "once the proposal was approved, on January 2, 2017 the Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Environment then announced that it would promote a project for the industrial exploitation of the natural area and publicly assured that it would raise the owners of the salt pans the signing of an agreement to resume the production of salt and that as far as possible would bet on facilitating the self-financing of museographic activities and environmental disclosure ".

"Since then, we know nothing," laments Padín.
