La Tabaqueria Marques Fuente El Sol, a tobacconist rooted in the history of Cartagena (16/03/2018)

The 'Tabaquería Marqués Fuente El Sol' has opened its doors on Calle Serreta number 15. The owners of this new establishment have wanted to create a unique space, beyond the usual shop.

For this they have introduced details, in their decoration and in their name, very rooted in the history of Cartagena.

In addition, the tobacco shop has expanded the offer of products including original and exclusive gift items.

María del Carmen Calín, Eduardo Diez and Domingo García are three friends who have embarked together on this new project, opening a different outlet.

And they did it just over two and a half months ago.

A project that they have been able to implement with the collaboration of the Local Development and Employment Agency (ADLE), of the City of Cartagena.

The biologist María del Carmen Calín, known as May, is the owner of the new tobacconist.

Calín has had to put aside her facet as a researcher to become an enterprising woman, and all because of the need to work and generate income for her family.

Calín explains that the choice of a business as a tobacconist had some difficulties implied, which they had to save, since there is a very specific legislation on the concession of a tobacco and stamp dispenser.

"We had to find a place to sell, it was one of the demands, that, or have a lease of 5 years, something that has been almost impossible to get."

The collaboration of the Agency for Local Development and Employment (ADLE) has been essential for this business to see the light.

Domingo García, explains that the ADLE, supporting them, has helped the commercial regeneration of the old town.

"The agency has given us all the support, including the possibility of an economic aid that, if everything comes to fruition, will be a good push for the project can be completed."

The intention of placing your business on a street like La Serreta, traditionally of great commercial boom, is intended to contribute to the regeneration of this street.

Eduardo Diez explains that his commitment to the city can also be seen in the election of the name, "the Marquis was one of the owners of Castillitos, besides that our compañera May is a descendant of him".

And on the decoration, Diez says that they have also wanted to introduce elements of the city.

"We have tried to recreate the facade of the House of the Child in our showcase;

we have also put cobblestones on the ground, as in the Serreta;

and an old bank, rescued from my grandmother's house. "

This business, according to these entrepreneurs, has advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages that prices are set by the State, so there is no competition and some disadvantage, such as the small profit margin left by the sale of tobacco, of only 8.5 percent.

But they have not wanted to limit their new business to the sale of tobacco and offer a great diversity of original and exclusive gift items.

In the 'Tabaquería Marqués Fuente El Sol' they bet on a business that gets a little out of the traditional, "we wanted to have a space that not only attracted the smoker public, we want this to be a place where a mother can come with his children and make it a pleasant place, "explains Calín.

They have also wanted to bet on the world of the pipe, "we want to recover pipe smoking again, we have brought the exclusivity of two Irish firms made by hand Peterson and Stanvell, better known as Sherlock Holmes and Santa Claus" says Calín while showing the pipes.

In addition, there is a space dedicated to collectible miniatures, "we will also now bring gifts for communions, for example we have some 'boxes' of money, folded by hand, and that cost only 2 euros, much more elegant than doing it in an envelope There are also those of the Tooth Fairy, for the christening and for Christmas. "

A whole range of possibilities in the world of gifts that includes original writing pens and smoker articles.

In addition, the 'Marqués Fuente El Sol Tabaquería' has a wide uninterrupted schedule from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday.

Also open on Saturday mornings.

At Easter they will have a different schedule, closing later.
