MC supervises the start of the restoration work of the Roman Amphitheater, initiative promoted during his Government (01/03/2018)

This morning, the general secretary of MC Cartagena, José López, together with the person in charge of Culture and Heritage and the president of the Cartagena formation, Ricardo Segado and Jesús Giménez, respectively, visited the vicinity of the Roman Amphitheater to supervise firsthand the beginning of the works of recovery of this deposit promoted during his Government.

In this way, after a few months since the news of the collaboration of CARM, after numerous requests made by Segado, with the Master Plan of the Amphitheater, begin the tasks of consolidation of walls of the bullring, prior to the excavation.

These tasks will involve a municipal investment of 200,000 euros, which can be addressed thanks to the good management of MC that allowed the project to be economically undertaken from budgets 17-18.

In this sense, Ricardo Segado has celebrated that "what for so long we have been demanding from the opposition and afterwards we work from the municipal government is now a reality".

In the same way, he recalled that MC was in charge of preparing the project to consolidate the walls of the bullring and therefore its subsequent excavation.

"We can say that they are beginning to be a reality thanks to the work that has just begun."

A milestone in the historical and archaeological heritage of the city

Finally, the mayor of MC has ensured that the recovery of the Roman Amphitheater will mean a before and after the historical and archaeological heritage of the city.

"We are sure that it will become, once the deposit is visitable, one of the patrimonial and tourist references not only of Cartagena and the Region, but nationally and even internationally."

Chronology

In December 2015 a meeting of national and international experts on Roman amphitheatres was organized, exposing, among other conclusions, the uniqueness of the coexistence between the wall structures of the bullring and the Roman monument.

Based on the information received, it was agreed with the technicians of CARM to look for an architectural solution that respects both the plaza and the amphitheater.

Likewise, the need for prior documentation led to the first aerial photogrammetry of the monument, indoor and outdoor scanning of the Amphitheater, creating a 3D model, 3D film, as well as georadar studies.

With these data, the permit for archaeological intervention was requested from the DGBC who authorized the excavation in January, proceeding to carry out a double archaeological intervention between February and March 2017.

From the data obtained is undertaken, along with the engineering team of Florentino Regalado, a technical study of how to preserve the double wall of the square, respecting the underlying archaeological deposit and allowing with total safety the excavation of the Roman structure in the subsoil .

This is how the project that ended at the end of May 2017 came about, which provides a viable and very respectful solution, far from the aggressive proposals of micropilots from other times.

This is a novel project, designed for the whole of the bullring Roman Amphitheater of Cartagena, which proposes the consolidation of the double wall of the square through a system of reinforcement in all its surface, which will allow the interior space of the interior to be fully recovered. double wall, initially about 18 meters, with a cost of 200,000 euros consigned in the Department of Historical Heritage.

In this way, once consolidated, the excavation of the minor axis of the Amphitheater will be carried out with absolute security with its set of rooms with integral roof, as shown in the drawings of the 18th century.
