Cartagena will host the 68th edition of the Ciudad de Cartagena Tennis Tournament from February 18 to 24 (16/02/2018)

The 68th Ciudad de Cartagena Tennis Tournament and the III Edition of the Challenge Cup will be held between the 18th and the 24th of February on the slopes of the Cartagena Tennis Club.

This cup is the third oldest in all of Spain in which both local tennis players and athletes come from all over the national and international geography.

The competing players will face the challenge of winning the tournament for three consecutive years or five alternate years to get the Challenge Cup trophy;

trophy that has not managed to become a tennis player in the last 28 years.

The event was presented by the Councilor for Sports, Obdulia Gómez;

the president of the Federation of Tennis of the Region of Murcia, José Alcolea;

the president of the Tennis Club of Cartagena, Pedro Collado;

and the director of Sports of the Region, Alonso Gómez López.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE 2018 TOURNAMENT

The tournament will be played in the men's individual modality and there will be both a preliminary and a final phase.

During the days 18, 19 and 20 of February, the preliminary phase will be held, composed of 32 players, 26 for the best national ranking and 6 Wild Card.

Four players will be classified for the final phase.

The table of the final phase will be 16 players, 10 for the best national ranking, 2 for the Wild Card and 4 from the previous phase.

The matches of the final stage will take place from February 21 to 24.

On the 24th the final will be played to meet the winner of the LXVIII edition of the III Challenge Cup - City of Cartagena 2018.

HISTORY AND OUTSTANDING PLAYERS

The Challenge Cup was held in its first edition on 9, 10 and 11 February 1945 with players from Murcia, Alicante and Cartagena.

This first edition was only male and had as winner the Cartagena Juan Sarria Guerrero.

In 1947 the first women's edition was celebrated, from which Mrs. de Pons won.

Players like Manuel Santana or Rafa Nadal have gone through the Ciudad de Cartagena Tennis Tournament.

The winner of the years 1969-70-71 was Juan Manuel Couder, champion of Spain during the years 1955-56-65-66.

He was the first to win the Challenge Cup on property.

The tennis player Juan Carlos Ferrero was the winner of the second Challenge Cup of the year 1999. Just a year later, in the year 2000, he won the Davis Cup;

the Roland Garros in 2003 and came to be proclaimed number one in the world that year.
