MC will demand the municipal government to urge Repsol to continue with its investment in the neighborhood of the Roman Forum (14/02/2018)

On February 6, the Cartagena Port of Cultures consortium announced the approval of the project for the construction of the Roman Forum Museum, which will be financed by Repsol.

Given the amount that the multinational had budgeted to invest in the neighborhood of the Roman Forum, undertake the construction of the Museum will cause the excavation of an important part of this site, in particular, the urban plaza that is next to the Temple of Isis .

Therefore, MC Cartagena will require, during the next municipal plenary session, the socialist government to urge Repsol to continue with its investment in the neighborhood of the Roman Forum.

Faced with this situation, the spokesman of the MC Cartagena municipal group, José López, said that "we believe that the Repsol Foundation must maintain its commitment to Cartagena, and of course, the current Government should demand it as it was done during my term in office , because we are a municipality that supports port traffic, not one, of two refineries, which poses a very serious risk to all citizens of Cartagena, which we assume, and which Repsol must compensate for the only ways it can do so, for example , with this commitment to heritage ".

"Therefore, we want the City Council and, as we will demand in the next Plenary, to urge Repsol to continue with the excavation and financing of the Roman Forum Neighborhood, otherwise it will appear that, as happened in previous legislatures, some prefer to look on the other side with Repsol, with the aim of seeking some kind of prebend and not defending the general interest ".

Lopez has assured that "Cartagena gives much to Repsol and receives very little and this is one of the aspects in which it must influence the future of the municipality", adding the Cartagena spokesman that in relation to the Roman Forum Museum "we want to point out that Cartagena already has a Municipal Archaeological Museum 'Enrique Escudero de Castro' and that is the one that should be strengthened and not be fragmented.

Finally, the MC spokesman stressed that "it seems very good that together with the Roman Forum can be visited as a center of interpretation of the Roman quarter and the findings that have been found there, but from the unity and direction of the Museum Municipal Archeology, as an extension of it ".

"The Archaeological Museum may have several venues, but not fragmented with the aim of creating a new institution and all its management positions, where to place any faithful friend, subtracting Cartagena's ability to decide on its operation, because Cartagena does not need several archaeological museums, in any case, we need what we do not have: a Museum of the City ".
