Citizens fear that valuable works of Nicomedes Gómez from municipal property are being auctioned in online pages (11/02/2018)

- As you may have known the orange formation, in addition to the Don Quixote collection that was donated to the City of Cartagena in 1979, there would be another, belonging to the esoteric and mystical series of Nicomedes, also owned by the municipality and valued at 6 million euros, that is missing whereabouts;

Some of these works could be selling online through some pages specialized in the sale of art and antiques at a rate of half a million euros per unit.

- "Justice has not been done yet to the legacy of this great Cartagena, so we are also going to ask the City Council to take the necessary steps to enhance its artistic legacy," said the spokesman for Citizens in Cartagena, Manuel Padín

The Municipal Group of Citizens is investigating and asking in the City of Cartagena for the inventoried work of the great Cartagena painter and illustrator and Son of the City between 1952 and 1954, Nicomedes Gómez and its location in municipal facilities.

The orange formation does not rule out asking for explanations in the ordinary Plenary.

According to Citizen could know thanks to an article published in La Opinion and signed by businessman and writer, Javier Pedreño, in addition to the collection Don Quixote that was donated to the City of Cartagena in 1979 and exposed in 2016 in the Ramón Alonso Luzzy, there would also be another, belonging to the esoteric and mystical series of Nicomedes, of which 12 works are municipal property, which would be found unknown;

Cs has warned that part of it could be selling online through some pages specialized in the sale of art and antiques at a rate of half a million euros.

Regardless of whether this is taking place, Cs assures that it has not managed to know the fate of these 12 works by Nicomedes Gómez, which would be valued at around 6 million euros.

The spokesman for Citizens in Cartagena, Manuel Padín, regrets the little information that the City Council has been able to offer in this regard, "last month we sent a letter to Patrimonio to consult the file of all the works that the artist left to the city of Cartagena, but in the Heritage file there is only one work, dated June 18, 2003, for which its valuation, cataloging, and other requirements were requested to be able to inventory it, but it has remained in a deadlock since that year ".

In addition, Citizens has registered another letter, this time addressed to the Department of Culture in the same sense and is waiting for the answer.

"The last time the works of the mystical and esoteric series were seen was in a 2001 exhibition organized, among other entities, by the City Council, where the 12 municipally owned works were exhibited, three of them acquired by the Consistory in 1980, and the other nine ceded in 1984 by Nicomedes Gómez after his death, "said Manuel Padín.

Ciudadanos also recalled that the former mayor, José López, inaugurated in April 2016 an exhibition of illustrations by Nicomedes Gómez on Don Quixote at the Ramón Alonso Luzzy Cultural Center, on the occasion of the IV Centenary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes.

This collection, which is controlled, was exhibited for many years in the Municipal Archive, and was very successfully exhibited in 1994 in the Ramón Alonso Luzzy.

"Our Group wants to clarify, given the concern and doubts raised, what is the total work of this artist in possession of the City Council, where it is located and if it is perfectly inventoried, specifically the mystical and esoteric series," the spokesperson has summarized Citizens in Cartagena who fears that the local administration has not controlled and protected as it should this valuable artistic collection and is accumulating dust in a basement or has been stolen. "In addition, Manuel Padin believes that" justice has not been done yet to the legacy of this great painter and we will also request that the City Council make the necessary arrangements to value the legacy of an unrepeatable artist;

We have a pending debt and we have to find a place to expose the vision and the incalculable gift to Cartagena of this man. "
