The City Council has been demanding the removal of fiber cement from educational centers for more than two years and providing documentation (29/01/2018)

The City Council has been demanding the removal of all fiber cement roofs from schools in Cartagena for more than two years.

In fact, in November 2015 a list was sent to the Ministry of Education listing the 26 schools in which it had not yet withdrawn, by not answering or beginning the work to eliminate it, the Councilor for Education, David Martínez Noguera , he held several meetings with the previous Director of Centers, María Dolores Valcárcel, on this subject and in February 2017 the entire list was resent.

Due to the changes that took place in the regional government, in May of that same year the list with the asbestos centers was again sent to them and the councilor reiterated the request for the removal of said covers a month later.

"No one can say that we have not claimed that the fiber cement roofing of each of the schools in Cartagena be eliminated because it is not true.

We have demanded it by active and passive in each and every one of the meetings that we have had with the two general directors of Centers and with the Minister of Education since we arrived at the Government ", said the mayor David Martínez.

Since a month ago the Ministry of Education has a new document that includes, in detail, the square meters of fiber cement left in schools in the municipality of Cartagena.

"The City Council has done an impeccable job, even though it does not correspond to us, because it is the responsibility of the regional government.

We have done it because our only motivation is that the removal of fiber cement is done as quickly as possible for the good of the students and teachers.

What I think is unprecedented is to claim that the Consistory Cartagena invest their resources in doing the job that should have done the Ministry of Education for years, "said the mayor of Education.

The most outstanding case is the school of José María de la Puerta, which has a sports pavilion with an asbestos covering that generates a dust harmful to health by hitting the balloons on the roof.

The rest of the schools that have asbestos structures are the schools of La Aljorra, Gabriela Mistral, Jardines, Luis Vives, Miguel de Cervantes, Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores, San Antonio Abad, San Cristobal, San Francisco Javier, Santiago Apóstol, Vicente Medina , Anibal, Asdrubal, La Asomada, Carthago, Mediterranean, San Isidoro, San Fulgencio, Santa Florentina, Santa Maria del Buen Aire, Antonio Ulloa, La Concepcion, Mare Nostrum, San Felix, Stella Maris and Virgen del Carmen.
