The Roman Theater of Cartagena kicks off the European Year of Cultural Heritage with the organization of gastronomic routes (23/01/2018)

The Roman Theater of Cartagena, whose patronage is integrated by the Community, the City of Cartagena and Cajamurcia Foundation, has launched two new gastronomic routes to commemorate this 2018 the European Year of Cultural Heritage.

The activities are developed, under the name 'Historias con sabor', in collaboration with Cartagena Puerto de Culturas, and are related to the cultural heritage that Cartagena treasures, also making a nod to the Mediterranean diet and gastronomy, as they end with the tasting of different tapas related to the content of the visit.

One of the routes will also be conducted in English on alternate Sundays, with the aim of covering the high demand of foreign tourists.

According to data from 2017, 53 percent of visitors to the Museum of the Roman Theater of Cartagena were foreigners, mainly English tourists, although other nationalities such as Russian, French and German also stand out.

Continuing to increase the number of visitors and their degree of loyalty through policies of promotion, attention and diversification of the services offered is, together with the conservation of the monument and its collections, the main objective set by the foundation since the opening of the Roman Theater, in 2008. During these years, there are more than 1.5 million people who have passed through this space, the most visited museum in the Region of Murcia, which closed 2017 with a new record of over 220,000 visitors (an increase 8 percent).

The first of the new routes is 'Cartagena Tres Culturas'.

It will start in the panoramic elevator that elevates the visitor to the hill of Asclepios, the highest point of the city that dominates the bay, crowned by the Medieval Castle.

During the tour, you will know the medieval history and the confluence of the three cultures (Christian, Jewish and Muslim) in the port city.

The route will skirt the Church of Santa María la Mayor until you reach the Museo del Teatro Romano, and end with the tasting of a typical tapa of Jewish or Muslim cuisine.

This activity takes place every Saturday at 11:30 am.

The other new route is called 'One of Romans' and begins with the visit to the large building of shows the Roman Theater and its Museum.

There, the visitor will discover how the citizens of Carthago Nova enjoyed the thermal baths and the luxurious banquets dedicated to the goddess Isis in the Barrio del Foro Romano, getting an idea of ​​what it was like in the city of the Roman Empire.

At the end, a dish inspired by the Roman cuisine of Apicius' book will be served in this case.

This route will be conducted in English on alternate Sundays, to serve the high English-speaking public that receives the city of Cartagena and the Region of Murcia.

This Sunday, January 28 (at 11:30 am), the tour will take place in Spanish;

February 4 will be done in English, and so on.

The price for both activities is 14 euros (individual), 12 euros (reduced) and 7 euros (Club Cartagena Port of Cultures).
