The Culture and Archaeological Heritage area of Ricardo Segado concludes the restoration works of the original parapet of the wall of Carlos III (03/01/2018)

The Department of Culture and Archaeological Heritage directed by Ricardo Segado (MC Cartagena) has recently completed the restoration works of the original parapet of the wall of Carlos III.

Thus, from the area of competence of the first deputy mayor, a situation originated by the accidental fall of a heavy branch, belonging to a hundred-year-old ficus located opposite the main facade of the former Marina Hospital, is solved.

After this fact, the Department of Infrastructure proceeded to the withdrawal of the branch to facilitate the assessment of damages, issued by the municipal coordination of Historical and Archaeological Heritage.

This study revealed that the damage caused by the great weight of the branch, with an approximate diameter of one meter, had caused the start and dismantling of the upper line of limestone masonry of the parapet of the wall construction, about four meters.

Thus, it was determined that the force of the impact was of such magnitude that part of the masonry collapsed, falling some ten meters to the lower area of the wall, which caused the fracturing of several ashlars.

This situation, together with the imminent danger of collapse, advised the drafting of a restitution project for the affected section, as well as its delivery to the General Directorate of Cultural Property of the CARM, in order to request the required authorization, since it was required to act on a patrimonial element declared of Cultural Interest (BIC).

Content of the performance

The works, completed during the second half of last December, consisted of taking data and measurements of the area to be restored;

the cleaning of the affected area, as well as the removal of loose elements and dislocated mortars, while consolidating the surface of old mortar with lime water.

Subsequently, lime mortar and aggregate of similar granulometry was manufactured, proceeding to the reconstruction with original ashlars.

For these purposes we have counted on the help of a lifting platform and a truck crane, which has solved the large differences in the height of the work area.

The restitution of the parapet has been supervised by the municipal coordinator of Historical and Archaeological Heritage, Mari Carmen Berrocal, performed under the criteria of maintaining the solid work of the eighteenth century, applying materials and techniques similar to the original, although the restored area is It has been separated from the old one by a fiberglass mesh.

This, to comply with the regulations in force in relation to the Law of Historical Heritage.
