Culture will return its original aspect to the size of Saint John the Evangelist of Cartagena before Holy Week (27/12/2017)

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment will return its original appearance and polychromy to the likes of Saint John the Evangelist of the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Nazareno de Cartagena (Brotherhood of Marraja).

The General Director of Cultural Heritage, Juan Antonio Lorca, and the head of the Restoration Center of the Region, Francisco López Soldevila, visited the Castrense Church of Santo Domingo today to assess the status of the size that will be moved in a few days.

The work was made by the sculptor José Capuz in 1943 to replace the San Juan de Francisco Salzillo, lost in 1936. It is an image of carved and polychrome wood dress that is the owner of the Agrupación de San Juan de la Confraternidad Marraja y that procession in the early morning Cartagenera and in the procession of the Burial of the evening-night of Good Friday.

In the Restoration Center, according to the Director General of Cultural Assets, Juan Antonio Lorca, "the technicians will first carry out an in-depth study of the image (radiographic plates, chemical analysis ...) to detect possible anomalies, using the equipment of first level that has turned this space into one of the most prepared and best equipped restoration centers in the country ".

Then, a cleaning and punctual interventions will be carried out in those areas where deficiencies are noticed to solve, for example, the rubbing of the fingers.

Special attention will be paid to the polychrome of the carving in order to correct its current tone, caused by the oxidation of the varnish applied to it after a restoration made fifteen years ago.

Finally, and according to the initial study carried out, it will also be necessary to reinforce the internal structure of this image of clothing, which is weakened.

In the case of San Juan de Capuz, Juan Antonio Lorca indicated that, "as soon as the Christmas holidays are over, the size will be transferred to the Restoration Center so that it is ready before the next Holy Week and the size will be renewed in the Chapel Marraja of the Church of Santo Domingo de Cartagena, whose baroque wooden polychrome altarpiece was also restored last year with the collaboration of the Ministry of Culture, thus contributing to further value the Holy Week of Cartagena, declared of International Tourist Interest "

The person in charge of Cultural Assets recalled "the special interest of the Regional Government and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Environment for the care and conservation of our heritage and, in the case of artistic heritage, our Restoration Center plays an indispensable role we try to promote and make known among citizens. "

Throughout 2017, a total of ten works arrived from different municipalities.

"In most cases they are religious works, which shows the great wealth and quality of the imagery of our region," said the head of Culture.

Among the works that have gone through the Restoration Center are, for example, the patron saints of Albudeite, Torre Pacheco, and Lorca, Nuestra Señora de las Huertas, which is in the process of being restored together with the sculpture of San Miguel of Murcia.

They have also been restored during this 2017 by the technicians of the Restoration Center carvings that procession in Holy Week in Cartagena, Blanca and Cehegín, as well as several works belonging to convents and museums.

To these works we must add the cleaning and intervention carried out in some of the pieces exhibited in the 'Signum' exhibition, held on the occasion of the 2017 Jubilee Year in Caravaca de la Cruz.
