The Minister of Employment, Universities and Business inaugurates a business day organized by the Cartagena employers to analyze the strategic lines of economic development in the area

The Community, through the Institute of Development, has driven only in the last two years a total of 174 industrial projects in the region of Cartagena and Mar Menor that have created a total of 253 jobs, in addition to helping to maintain another 5,000 jobs.

The investment of the regional development agency in that period, both in R + D + i programs and projects, as well as in internationalization or productive investments, was 10.2 million euros, an amount that companies have multiplied by four by mobilizing a total investment of 40 million euros.

This was highlighted today by the Minister of Employment, Universities and Enterprise, Juan Hernández, during the opening of the XV Conference for Business Leaders of the Region of Cartagena, a meeting organized by the Regional Confederation of Business Organizations of Cartagena (COEC) to analyze the strategic lines and most outstanding projects for the economic development of this area.

"The region of Cartagena is one of the engines of the regional economy due, among other reasons, to its powerful petrochemical, naval or plastic industry and the importance and efficiency of its agri-food and tourism sectors."

"From the regional government we will maintain our commitment to the development of this industrial pole, a commitment that continues to improve infrastructures, strengthen the industries installed in the polygons of the area and the important energetic and petrochemical core of Escombreras or continue to promote an ecosystem of highly technological SMEs capable of becoming suppliers of services to these large industries, "added Juan Hernández.

In this regard, the Minister of Employment announced that it will strengthen the presence of the Institute for Development in the port city through the reopening of the office that the regional development agency has in the headquarters of the European Center for Business and Innovation of Cartagena ( Ceeic) to give a closer service to the businessmen and contribute to the growth of an industrial pole that represents more than 25 percent of the regional Gross Domestic Product.

This increased presence will translate, among other things, into the organization and implementation, through the Info office in Cartagena, technical conferences, specialized workshops and innovation and mentoring programs for entrepreneurs in the region of Cartagena

Support for entrepreneurship and industrial growth

One of the lines of work is the impulse to innovation, an area to which the Info has allocated more than 1.2 million euros that have driven 59 R & D projects that have generated an investment of 2.4 million euros and they have created 52 direct jobs, in addition to contributing to maintain another 1,320.

In addition, we are working intensively on the collaboration between the SMEs of the region of Cartagena and the large tractor industries to generate synergies and improve industrial productivity in the area through technological collaboration and open innovation mechanisms.

To this end, the Isaac Peral Foundation has recently been launched, a public and private organization promoted by Info, in which around twenty of these large industries are integrated and in which industrial and technological SMEs will also participate.

"It's about boosting the knowledge economy by boosting talent in the industrial fabric through the development of new projects, betting on the training and human capital of students and researchers from universities in the region and consolidating the brand 'Región de Murcia Industrial 'as a pole of attraction of productive investments,' explained the head of Industry.

In terms of entrepreneurship, one of the latest initiatives is the launching of the Entrepreneurship Free Zones project, designed to take advantage of the strengths and resources of the different municipalities of the Region and which, in the case of Cartagena, has allowed the identification of twenty niches of business linked to the field of diving.

This project could generate about 30 companies and create a hundred direct jobs in areas such as the development of mobile applications, the management of underwater drones, the recreation of submarine routes in virtual reality or the aging of wines under water.

Likewise, other outstanding support programs for entrepreneurs and the development of technological innovation projects are being carried out, such as the launch of the Carthago Crowdworking Center, the result of collaboration between Info, Telefónica, the Polytechnic University of Cartagena and the Chamber of Commerce of the port city;

the 'coworking' center set up together with the School of Industrial Organization (EOI) or the Iniciativas Emprendedoras program, organized together with the COEC employers' association and which has helped to create a total of 230 companies that have generated 600 posts of work.
