Cartagena City Council receives the Igloo Verde Ecovidrio prize (10/11/2017)

The City Council of Cartagena has been awarded with the 'Igloo Verde' prize from Ecovidrio, an acknowledgment for the effort made and the commitment made by the Consistory in the recycling of glass this summer.

The Councilor for Sustainable Development, María José Soler, has collected the award from the manager of the area of the Valencian Community, Balearic Islands, Region of Murcia and Albacete, Roberto Fuentes.

As explained by Roberto Fuentes, the award has been given to Cartagena having recycled 929 tons of glass during the summer and having exceeded by 8% the recycling figure of the previous year, recognizing in this way the commitment of citizens and catering professionals with the recycling of glass.

In this edition, a total of 146 catering establishments in Cartagena have collaborated with the entity, an important fact given the influence of the hospitality sector, which generates 50% of waste from single-use glass containers.

In addition, the summer season is vital for the recycling of glass, a period in which 30% of the total recycled glass is collected during the year.

The results obtained have been achieved thanks to the collaboration of hospitality professionals in Cartagena and the provision of resources by Ecovidrio.

With the aim of facilitating citizen collaboration, 110 cubes have been delivered adapted to the needs of hospitality professionals and the frequency of glass collection has been extended to adequately manage the increase in activity in this sector.

According to the latest data for 2016, the citizens of Cartagena recycled a total of 2,796,540 kilograms of glass, which means that each inhabitant recycled an average of 13.0 kg.

Regarding the rate of containerization, Cartagena is located with an average of 215 inhabitants per container, currently having a total of 998 igloos for glass packaging waste installed.

The Councilor for Sustainable Development, María José Soler, has reiterated its commitment to continue collaborating with initiatives of this kind to achieve higher levels of recycling in our municipality.
