The students of the Virgen del Carmen explain to the mayor their participatory budgets (07/11/2017)

The 6th grade students of the CEIP Virgen del Carmen who coordinate the initiative of the Participatory Budgets in the center, presented at noon today, November 7, the results of the project to date in front of their classmates, teachers .

An act to which the mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, and the Councilor for Citizen Participation, Juan Pedro Torralba, attended.

The center has this year, as part of a pilot project of the City, an endowment of 10,000 euros that students will decide what is intended through a participatory system identical to that to be made at the municipal level.

In the case of this school, the students themselves are coordinating the participatory process with the mere supervision of the teachers.

The boards of directors of the two sixth-year cooperatives, born last year at the center as part of the Entrepreneurs in School project, met on September 18 to coordinate the work to be carried out.

An email was created, the dissemination campaign was planned, the logo was designed for the project in the center and the calendar was drawn up to publicize the project among the other groups and make the subsequent collection of proposals.

A work that the students have been developing during the recess so as not to lose class hours.

The members of Arcoiris and Pequeños Creators, who are the names of the two cooperatives, explained in front of the students of all the courses, from infant to 5th grade of primary school, the project of the Participative Budgets, both locally and at the center level .

In that same presentation a sheet was handed out in each class to collect the proposals of each group.

The deadline for collecting the proposals ended yesterday, November 6, hence the meeting with all his colleagues and the municipal authorities to give an account of how the process has gone that the students themselves are collecting in a newspaper that later will be reflected in a blog .

The mayor congratulated the team that made the presentation for his "fantastic explanation" and for being "an example for all Cartagena" for the clarity of his presentation that shows his understanding of this project.

"I know we have not made a mistake in deciding that your school was the first one (in carrying out this pilot project), you are going to move on to the history of Cartagena", the mayor told them, who invited them to present the project on next year before the centers that continue with this initiative.

The projects collected by the students will now go to the municipal technicians, who will study their viability.

Once the viable ideas are selected, the students will make them known among their classmates so that on December 1 all the students vote to which projects the budget will be allocated.

From the City Council there is a commitment to be executed before the end of the course so that sixth graders can see them before moving to the institute.

This pilot experience is carried out this year in two centers, in the IES Los Dolores with an endowment of 15,000 euros and in the Virgen del Carmen with an endowment of 10,000 euros.
