DIRECTOR PLAN

Thus, Segado has realized that for two weeks has been working on the first phase of the Master Plan, to define the bases of action "for proper management use and maintenance of it."

To this end, a multidisciplinary team has been formed coordinated by the General Director of Historical and Archaeological Heritage, M.ª Carmen Berrocal, and which includes the architect M.ª José Muñoz Mora, from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena;

and the historian specialized in sculpture of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Diego Ortiz Martínez.

The work will begin with a 'Descriptive and justifying memory', which will include the history of the cemetery, an analysis of the original project, a historical and stylistic study of each of the elements worthy of individualization, property analysis and proposals for protection and conservation .

The councilor of heritage wanted to highlight that within the Plan will be collected the "specific rules for the complex and the actions carried out in it", something that will affect licenses for new construction, reform, remodeling of the urban space, decoration, conservation and protection, so that the style of the complex is preserved and discordant future works are avoided.

It will also include a planimetry, establishment of the plot, plans with protection zones levels, as well as tours of the main monuments of interest.

PRIORITY RECOVERY OF THE PEDROÑO PANTHEON

Within the priority actions, we want to start the recovery of the Pedreño Pantheon, whose property has recently reverted to the Town Hall.

A complex that is "in a painful situation of abandonment" has indicated the councilman.

For this reason, a technical report has been commissioned on its constructive condition with which it is necessary to solve the security problems, water penetration by the roofs, humidity and corrosion of the locksmith.

Segado has announced that "it is going to intervene in an immediate way so that the process of deterioration of the Pedreño Pantheon does not continue advancing uncontrollably.

In the next 2 years, the creation of a web page, the edition of a tourist catalog, a book of disclosure and the realization of a detailed inventory of goods are also contemplated.

PROMOTION OF CEMETERY TOURISM

As a complement to these actions of conservation, already in the tourist section, the councilor of tourism has indicated that from the Consistory seeks to put in value this space, the first monumental cemetery of the Region.

That is why you want to bet on necrotourism or cemetery tourism, as an offer of thematic tourism offered by Cartagena.

For this purpose, the form has been sent to request the recognition of the Cementerio de los Remedios as Significant Cemeteries of Europe by the ASCE.

"Beyond its funerary function, we consider that the cemetery is an architectural, historical and artistic element of cultural importance and hence our interest in proposing your visit as a tourist activity" said Gómez.

Thus, it seeks to offer "a kind of open-air museum that allows the story of Cartagena to be told in an original and novel way, through the people who are buried there and who, after all, are the ones who write the history, It's over.

Next year the explanatory brochures will be made and indicative posters of the most outstanding graves will be placed, with the idea that it has already been admitted to the Cementerio de los Remedios as part of the European Cemeteries Route which includes today 179 more cemeteries of 22 countries and thus launch new tourist routes.

THE CEMETERY OF REMEDIES

The works of the Cemetery of the Remedies began in the year 1866 in the hacienda of San Juan, next to Santa Lucia, directed by the architect Carlos Mancha.

Years later the chapel was built under the direction of the architect Antonio Oliver, whose interior was decorated with paintings by Wssell de Guimbarda.

The great wealthy families that inhabited Cartagena between the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 19th century, projected their final resting place with the idea that it was as ostentatious as the palaces that occupy the center of the city.

That is why many of these businessmen in commerce and mining commissioned funeral cemeteries to the same architects who had designed their houses.

The pantheons are decorated with a variety of poetic symbols, allusions to antiquity or Freemasonry, which are a reflection of the history and customs of the time.
