Mayors and irrigators of the Campo de Cartagena agree to promote measures to alleviate the drought situation (31/10/2017)

The Community of Irrigators of Campo de Cartagena CRCC has requested this morning to the mayors, councilors and technicians of the eight municipalities of the irrigable zones for this community (Cartagena, Fuente Álamo, Los Alcázares, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar, Pacheco Tower , Murcia and Pilar de la Horadada), the implementation of measures to alleviate the situation of water deficit that crosses this demarcation.

He has done it in a meeting in the Building of the Regidor, which has been attended by the City Council of Cartagena the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, and the councilor of Agriculture, Obdulia Gómez.

SITUATION OF THE REGTAANTES OF THE CARTAGENA FIELD

The president of CRCC, Manuel Martínez, has started the meeting by explaining the situation in which the Community of Irrigators is located, covering an irrigated area of 41,920 hectares in which 9,678 members carry out their agricultural activity.

At present, the resources available for the hydrological year 2017-18 are 11.9 cubic hectometres.

7% of the demand of the community, which has an annual water requirement of 180 cubic hectometres.

The current resources come from the wastewater treatment plants WWTP (6.7 hm³), the desalinization plant from slag heaps (4 hm³), the drought wells (0.7 hm³) and the transfers of rights from the Tagus ( 0.5 hm³).

It should be noted with respect to this last source of resources that the Entrepeñas-Buendía reservoirs, from which the Tajo-Segura transfer originates, have been below the level permitted by the transfer of water according to the law since May.

MEASURES BEFORE THE CURRENT SITUATION

For all this, the members of the consistories have been asked to approve, in their respective plenary sessions, measures for: the defense of the Tajo-Segura transfer, which is considered essential for the agri-food sector of the Spanish southeast;

to put to maximum performance the desalination plants, which work now at around half their capacity;

to elaborate a decree of drought that expedites the taking of urgent measures as the construction of a battery of wells for its use in these situations, always with guarantees of a sustainable exploitation;

demand that the transfer of inter-basin rights be promoted and that a social price for desalinated water be established.

They have also been asked to sign the Levantine Water Manifesto that sets all these measures.

Martinez has placed special emphasis on his contact with the media after the meeting in which it is not only necessary measures for irrigators, "there are serious problems to guarantee the supply for human consumption, it is a problem of society in general, and in particular of the Murcian society "has indicated.

In this regard, he has expressed the need for the unity of politicians in this issue "regardless of their color", given that it is a subject on which there must be a common front.

Although it is not the worst drought that has ever been experienced, it has indicated that it is a cyclical event, and therefore it should be foreseen.

For its part, the mayor of Cartagena has considered that it is an issue of vital importance, and in which "unfortunately some politicians only put the batteries when you go through more drastic moments and severe episodes of drought."

That is why the CRCC president's request for a common front "in which all the municipality has committed itself" has been seconded.

He has expressed his willingness to act "without haste but without pause", to consolidate measures that foresee these situations of hydric crisis through infrastructures and measures that are already determined before they happen again.

He also recalled that the richness of the economy of Campo de Cartagena comes largely from the garden and therefore from agriculture.

That is why he has wished that the measures be approved unanimously by the Municipal Corporations.

So he concluded that with this meeting sent a message of "unity of all mayors with farmers to demand action by the Central Government", and that the approved measures serve as a firm step towards a better situation is this issue.
