Researchers and farmers share in the UPCT solutions to regenerate the Mar Menor (10/10/2017)

The experts remember in the day of the Chair of Sustainable Agriculture the importance of managing the waters to reverse the "critical state" in which the lagoon is

The Chair of Sustainable Agriculture of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) and the agrarian organizations today promoted the debate on 'Factors influential in the state of Mar Menor and search for solutions' between scientists and farmers.

The researchers of the Polytechnic Javier Gilabert Cervera and Francisco López Castejón participate in the conference with a presentation on the hydrodynamics of the Mar Menor and its relationship with the Mediterranean.

The work of both pioneers in the study of the currents in the salt lagoon, already revealed that the weather conditions of last winter favored the regeneration of the water this summer.

His thesis delves into the importance of the channels that communicate both seas for the maintenance of the ecosystem.

Another expert who gives a presentation today is Angel Perez Ruzafa, who has advocated "to adopt durable solutions quickly", because so far "have taken provisional measures."

For the professor of Ecology at the University of Murcia the Mar Menor continues "in critical condition.

It has not broken at all and has not surpassed the point of no return. "

However, it is optimistic given the "adaptability of the coastal lagoons, which renew 40% of their species every year".

The scientist stressed the importance of water management and its reuse with infrastructures of treatment and transport to make compatible the agricultural uses and the sustainability of the Mar Menor.

The day has been attended by the director of Community Water, Miguel Angel of Love, who has considered "fundamental dialogue between all those affected to reach solutions."

Santiago Martínez, from Fecoam, stressed that "the Chair gives us a definite impulse for our proposals to be taken seriously" and recalled that "the agricultural sector is annoying" because of the treatment received.

"We have done the homework and we face the little or a lot of fault we can have," concluded the inauguration of the event, which was chaired by the Vice Rector of Research, Beatriz Miguel.
