The City of Cartagena will tender the first project of consolidation of walls of the Plaza de Toros that will allow advance in the excavations of the Roman Amphitheater.

This was announced on Tuesday, September 26, the Councilor of the Archaeological Heritage Area, Ricardo Segado, who explained that recently arrived at the council that directs the permission of the General Directorate of Cultural Assets to start the process of this first project that will allow the excavation of the first quarter of the amphitheater.

"We continue advancing in the recovery of our heritage, in particular, a star project such as the Roman Amphitheater," said Segado.

Thus, the mayor recalled, the municipal government has worked "tirelessly for this amphitheater," since the first meetings were held with national and international experts, municipal technicians and the General Directorate of Cultural Property, which took place in December from 2015 until the request of the archaeological intervention permit in November 2016, which allowed in February and March of 2017 to perform a double archaeological intervention with which data were known as the existence of various sections of the monument of more than 11 meters height.

From this research came a study that was presented in the Ministry of Culture in July of this year that provides a solution "viable and very respectful, away from aggressive proposals of micropiles of other times."

Segado explained that this project is "absolutely new, pioneering and designed exprofeso for the whole of the Plaza de Toros - Amphitheater of Cartagena that proposes the consolidation of the double wall of the square through a system of reinforcement throughout its surface that will allow fully recover the interior space of the double wall ".

These works will initially be done in about 18 meters, with a cost of 200,000 euros already contemplated in the budget of the Department of Historic and Archaeological Heritage.

Once these works are consolidated, the excavation of the minor axis of the Amphitheater will be realized with the set of rooms of integral ceiling, "as we show the drawings of the XVIII century", stressed the mayor of Archaeological Patrimony.

For its part, the director general of Historical Heritage and Archeology explained that the project will consist of consolidating the double wall of the bullring by means of a series of metal elements "and tie them to stand alone on the surface of the amphitheater, which will allow to eliminate the micropilotaje that collected previous projects and that supposed to pierce in the subsoil.

The main novelty of the project is the composition of the multidisciplinary team, made up of engineers and architects, and has created a totally new system, specially designed for the Amphitheater of Cartagena and that has not been used anywhere else before.

In addition, highlighted Berrocal, from the façade to the autopsy pavilion there is a double wall that is intended to maintain "with a practical purpose, as a place of exhibition, museum area or an interpretation center, which will be distributed in three heights.

From the information that will be collected from this project will be realized the master plan, which would have a cost of 40,000 euros and would be taken care of by the Autonomous Community.

If finally that money did not arrive, has assured the councilman of Archaeological Heritage, the City would take care of it.

"Since December of 2015 we have never stopped working," said Mª Carmen Berrocal, while emphasizing the various collaborations made in this time with the technicians of the General Directorate of Cultural Property of the Region of Murcia and with numerous national and international experts.

Once this first project has started, the works of consolidation of walls will last, Berrocal announced, about four months.

From that moment, the excavations of the first quarter of the amphitheater will begin and, later, with the master plan already written, it will be possible to continue advancing in the valorization of the deposit.

The Director of Historic Heritage has emphasized the validity of the process being followed and has ensured that "with enough subsidy, in about two years or two and a half years, work could be done."
