Community extends 265 places to care for the elderly in Cartagena (08/09/2017)

The Community has offered summer activities to the more than 100,000 elderly people of the social centers and residences of the Region

The Community has increased in 265 places the attention to the elderly in the municipality of Cartagena, as indicated today by the Minister of Family and Equality of Opportunities, Violante Tomás, in his visit today to the residence of elderly people 'Los Jazmines' in Cartagena, which has six places funded by the Instituto Murciano de Acción Social (IMAS) with 70,000 euros.

In Cartagena, up to 406 places for older people were offered in centers with which the IMAS held concerts.

The Ministry, said Violante Tomás, "has made a major budget effort and has increased the service of care for the elderly in 265 places, 225 of residence and 40 for day centers, to reach the current 671 places."

In the current legislature, the Community has created 691 places for elderly people of residential care and day care throughout the Region, of which 22 will be put into service this September.

The Community already finances 4,107 places for the care of elderly people in day centers and residences, compared to 3,448 places at the beginning of the legislature, which represents an increase of close to 18 percent in the last two years.

Balance of summer activities

The counselor took stock of the actions carried out this summer for elderly people and recalled that the Community has offered summer activities to the more than 100,000 elderly people of the social centers and residences of the Region.

The regional government is committed to the care of the elderly, developing programs for active aging and prevention of dependency, with an extensive leisure and cultural offer to the 17 social centers of older people and residences.

The social centers of older people have organized different activities for the summer period.

Thus, for the social center Jumilla, every Wednesday they have made excursions to the beach of Los Alcázares;

in Archena, trips to the beach Cala del Pino, in La Manga del Mar Menor during every Tuesday in July, August and first of September;

and in the center of Cieza have been realized every Sunday excursions to Lo Pagán and encounter with corals and dance groups.

As for the rest of centers, the associates of the center of Yecla participated on Thursday on excursions to the beach of Santa Pola.

For the greater associates of the center of Las Torres de Cotillas have been made exits to the beach of Los Alcázares.

On the occasion of the celebrations of Las Torres also sports championships were celebrated, performances of the musical groups of the center and projection of a documentary, among other activities.

Violante Tomás stressed that "participation in travel and the carrying out of tourism activities, connecting with other environments and accessing cultural assets, improves the quality of life of older people, favors the creation or maintenance of employment in the tourism sector and power economic activity in various sectors of the economy.A few of these activities will continue until mid-September, such as the trip to Mojácar scheduled for next Sunday, the 10th.
