They propose to incorporate a new phase to the treatment of sludge of the purifiers (17/08/2017)

A thesis of the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT) defends the use of the hydrocyclone technique to optimize the management of the sludge in urban sewage treatment plants, maximizing the time of use of its anaerobic digesters.

The tests were carried out in the Murcia-Este treatment plant, recovering the useful capacity of the digester after years of continuous operation and as an alternative to the emptied for cleaning.

"The hydrocyclone system showed a separation capacity over time for all types of solids," explains Joaquín López-Castellanos, author of the thesis led by UPCT researchers Javier Bayo and Áng Faz.

"The technical-economic study for 10 years of exploitation, against conventional cleanings every 3-5 years, allows to propose its feasibility for the system to be incorporated in the plants with anaerobic digesters, as it also avoids some operational disadvantages and risks compared to Other classic cleaning methods, "López-Castellanos.

The doctoral thesis also provides the application of multivalent analysis techniques for a better management of the process data that are handled every day in the purification plants in order to improve the control efficiency in the purified water quality.
