The UPCT shows in a book the more than 8,000 trees in the historical center of Cartagena (31/07/2017)

Researchers and students of the Agronomists and Architecture schools of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) have registered more than 8,000 trees in the historic city center.

This work is part of the actions of the Chair of Municipal Infrastructures of the City of Cartagena-UPCT.

A book collects in one hundred pages the more than 80 species of trees that citizens can contemplate as they pass through gardens, parks and streets.

The study gathers all the information about the city's trees, the measures of the trunk perimeter, the diameter of the crown, height, distribution, diversity, landscape effect and shadow that they project.

In addition, data on the origin of the tree, leaf type, flower and fruit, flowering period, the size of the tree and the percentage of trees of each species are given.

In short, data related to the selection criteria of the trees that serve to support a better management of the same.

It is important to highlight the high specific diversity, with no species that exceed 20% of the total species present in the hull of Cartagena.

On the other hand, data are provided in relation to abundance, for example, cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) is the most abundant tree in parks and gardens, while the banana of shade (Platanus hispanica) predominates in the streets.

It is important to note the presence of Mediterranean species such as the algarrobo (Ceratonia siliqua), an indigenous tree traditionally used as a shade tree and now being cultivated.

This species is more abundant in the Parque de la Rosa, in the Torres Park and in the Los Juntos Park.

The book includes a complete study of Palmetum, the park located in Ronda de Ferrol, next to the UNED, where citizens can appreciate 78 palm trees belonging to 28 species of different origin from Brazil, California, Argentina, etc., being the only palm of Mediterranean origin.

The book is the result of the work carried out during 2016 in the line of Green Infrastructures and Landscaping, one of the six lines of work of the Chair.
