Architects of the UPCT will virtually restore the altarpiece of the Relief Chapel of the Old Cathedral of Cartagena (12/07/2017)

"A team of researchers from the Technical School of Architecture and Construction of the UPCT, led by Professor Manuel Ródenas, will initiate a research project whose main objective will be the virtual restitution of the disappeared altarpiece of the Chapel of the Most Holy Christ of the Relief of the Old Cathedral of Santa Maria, Cartagena.

The results of this research, proposed by the Confraternity of Christ of Socorro, will be disseminated in the form of audiovisual projection and will serve as a basis to undertake in the future the volumetric and spatial recomposition of the altarpiece.

The research project, unique in Spain combining audiovisual techniques and 3D printing, was presented to the Rector of the Polytechnic, Alejandro Diaz, in the presence of the older brother of the Illustrious Brotherhood of the Holy and Real Cristo del Socorro, Manuel Martínez Guillén, and The president of the Association of the Christ, José Damián Catalá.

After a photogrammetric survey and laser-scanner, and after a documentary research phase, the volume of the altarpiece will be digitally restored in 3D.

At the same time, the technique of image mapping will be used in order to be able to project them through real-time, canonical cannons on their original site in the chapel, whose restoration works are currently being carried out and are expected to be completed by next January.

The reproduction will premiere on the eve of the procession on Thursday of Dolores of 2018, when the group moves to its chapel the Christ.

"We hope it arouses great interest among tourists and neighbors and serves to make known the exciting history of our brotherhood," says Catalá.

The second phase of the project will consist of 3D printing of the various pieces of the altarpiece for its physical installation, for which its impellers are given a period of about five years.

The brother Tomás Martínez Pagán will be in charge of obtaining the financial support of the Cartagena society.

The Chapel of the Relief Christ of the old church of Santa Maria is the biggest chapel of the temple and, next to the Chapel of the Four Saints, one of the best preserved elements.

Owned by the Socorro brotherhood, the chapel was built in 1691 as thanks for the healing of a son of the Duke of Veragua.

The works of digital restitution will be carried out by experts in Architectural Heritage of the UPCT, who teaches a master on this subject in which works and projects are carried out on heritage elements of Cartagena and its region, contributing knowledge and intervention proposals for its Conservation and value creation.

In the project approach, several Italian students participated in this postgraduate course.
