The Cultural and Heritage Area organizes a day to commemorate Wednesday the Cantonal Revolution (10/07/2017)

In line with the recognition, respect and diffusion of Cartagena history and culture, the Culture and Heritage Area, directed by Ricardo Segado, has designed a program of events aimed at commemorating, next Wednesday, July 12, the 144th anniversary Of the Cantonal Revolution, one of the most relevant events of the three-year history of Cartagena.

This day gives continuity to the initiative begun the previous year and recalls, according to the Council, the sacrifice of the city for some ideals: the defense of the federal constitution of the Spanish State.

The program of events will be extended throughout the day to recall the political beginning of the Cantonal Uprising in Cartagena and the proclamation of the Municipal Revolutionary Board of Public Salvation, within the framework of the federalist insurrection that occurred during the First Republic (1873 -1874).

This is the first official document of the Cantonal Uprising of Cartagena and the entire cantonal insurrectional movement of 1873.

THE CANTON OF CARTAGENA

The cantonal uprising triumphed in Cartagena, which turned it into a stronghold and base of operations of the federalist movement, establishing here the first provisional government of the Spanish Federation.

According to historians, Cartagena resisted for six months the siege and bombing of Central Government troops, heroism that ran from July 12, 1873 to January 12, 1874, a date that represents the end of the Canton of Cartagena.

The city was reduced almost to rubble by its resolute and unshakable defense of some ideals: the defense of federalism in the Spanish Republic, as well as the application of diverse policies that would propitiate a very significant advance in social matters.
