The Resolution of the General Directorate of Cultural Property of CARM, which initiates the procedure for the declaration of Cultural Interest (BIC), with a category of monument, in favor of the Marraja Chapel of Our Father Jesus Nazareno, MC , Through a letter addressed to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment has shown its support.

Thus, after the publication in BORM of the aforementioned recognition as BIC of the Chapel Marraja, the president of the formation cartagenerista, Jesus Giménez, has emphasized that this is a "very successful" measure that will serve to recognize and recognize its importance And artistic value.

In this sense, Giménez has considered that "we take advantage of the opportunity that we are offered to once again extol the heritage of Cartagena, as the richest in the Region and one of the principal in Spain."

Historical and patrimonial value of the Chapel Marraja

The Chapel of Our Father Jesus Nazareno, located in C / Major number 28 of Cartagena, where it has entrance through a wooden door from the Cathedral of Cartagena, Santa María la Mayor;

As well as by the Military Parish of Santo Domingo, through an iron rejería;

Is owned by the Royal and Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Nazareno (Marrajos), where he receives worship.

The brotherhood had a primitive chapel in the Cathedral of Cartagena, before acquiring in 1642 this jewel of religious architecture of the city in the old Dominican convent of San Isidoro, where even the old graves of the brotherhood took place;

Being later expanded in the S. XVIII until its current configuration.

Concretely it was blessed and its opening occurred in 1732.

Of its interior we can emphasize that it counts on 97 m2, as well as with design of quadrangular plant covered by a dome on pechinas, where are represented the Major Prophets: Isaías, Jeremías, Ezequiel and Daniel.

In the front we can find the dressing room where the image of Our Father Jesus Nazareno, made by José Capuz in 1945, is venerated;

As well as the baroque altarpiece with the niches where are housed the images of the Santísima.

Virgen Dolorosa (attributed to Francisco Salzillo, S. XVIII), Santa Maria Magdalena (Jose Hernandez Navarro, 1984) and San Juan Evangelista (Jose Capuz, 1943);

And on these the paintings attributed to Manuel Sánchez: the Descent, Calvary and Crucifixion of Christ.

The patrimony that houses the chapel is completed by the images and sculptural ensembles of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary (Jose Esteve and Bonet, S. XVIII), the Santísimo Cristo Yacente (Joseph Capuz 1926), the Most Holy Descent of Christ 1930) and the Holy Love of San Juan in the Solitude of the Virgin (José Capuz, 1958).

The processional Cross of the Dominican convent (S. XVI) can also be seen in the chapel, being this the oldest element that takes part in the Holy Week of the city of Cartagena, opening the processions marrajas.

All this heritage is thickened with the tunics, robes, sashes and crowns that carry the images.

Finally, it should be noted that the sacred space that forms the chapel is crowned by a baroque dome under which stands out an exceptional artistic ensemble perfectly preserved and maintained in time, not only for the devotion of the faithful but also in communion with its meaning intimately Linked to the processions of Holy Week.

Congratulations to the incoming Big Brother and thanks to the outgoing

Likewise, Jesús Giménez, on behalf of MC, has transferred his congratulations and best wishes for the future to Francisco Pagan, who was elected on Tuesday

Brother Major of the Brotherhood Marraja, receiving 153 votes of the members of the Board of Table.

In this line, Giménez expressed his appreciation for the work carried out by Domingo Bastida, outgoing Major Brother, during his seven years in office, in the task of preserving the Moroccan heritage and in enhancing the best Holy Week in Spain.
