The Museum of the Roman Theater and Cartagena Port of Cultures collaborate with the Summer Courses of UPCT 2017, in the organization of a course on 'The cultural legacy of illustration: from the diffusion of antiquity to intellectual renewal'. Will celebrate from 17 to 19 July in the Hall of Acts of the Museum of the Roman Theater.

This course will address the Cultural Heritage of a historical period that left an important imprint in our city.

With the arrival of the Bourbons, Cartagena experienced one of the greatest urban transformations of its history, not in vain this year is celebrated the Year of the Enlightenment, that is why it was wanted to seek an approach to this cultural legacy from various perspectives.

The lectures of the course will analyze the spread of Classical Antiquity, promoted by the young King of Naples, Carlos de Borbón, and later King of Spain, Carlos III.

This king is not only owed the discovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum, but also the diffusion of the findings, and with it the influence in the art of his time.

Thus, on Monday 17 Professor Maria del Carmen Alonso, researcher and curator of the exhibition 'Carlos III and the diffusion of Classical Antiquity', will analyze the figure of King Charles in the formation of the Academies and the dissemination of the findings of Pompeii , As well as José María Luzón, from the Museum of the Royal Academy of San Fernando will tell us about the collection of classical sculpture formed in this period.

The stay in Naples of King Charles also meant the development of the Neapolitan Nativity, central theme of the lecture by Professor Maria Teresa Marín, as well as the influence on fashion and tradition in clothing, which will be treated by the curator of the Museum of the Costume, Concepción Herranz.

The discovery of the Temple of Isis in Pompeii, the first Egyptian sanctuary that eighteenth-century scholars could contemplate, soon became a focal point of attraction for travelers on the Grand Tour.

Now the location of a very similar sanctuary in Cartagena highlights the relationship of these Roman cities to be addressed by Professor José Miguel Noguera, Professor of Archeology at the University of Murcia, and will make a subsequent visit to the temple of Isis de Cartagena .

But it was also a period of great scientific advances and intellectual renewal. These advances will be addressed by Professor Juan Francisco López and Professor Juan José Sánchez Baena, of the Chair of Naval History, who will address the formation and naval professionalization in the eighteenth century .

Finally, we will analyze the development and urban transformation in Cartagena illustrated by Professor José Antonio Martínez López, which will be completed with the visit to the Museum of Artillery to know the new model of the city made from the plane of Ordovas de 1799, as well as the influence of the new ideas in the Church of the time and its relationship with the Court, by Professor Cristóbal Belda, Professor of History of Art.
