Cartagena will have a new homeless center for homeless people (06/07/2017)

The delegation of Caritas in the diocese of Cartagena will open in September the Hogar Sagrada Familia, a low-income reception center that will serve, accompany and promote homeless people of the port city and which will have facilities of 400 meters Squares and with a contracted workforce of five workers and several volunteers.

The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, the bishop of the diocese of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca, the Director General of Social Policies of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, Míriam Pérez, the director of the delegation of Caritas in the diocese Of Cartagena, José Saura, and the lay councilor of the vicariate of Cartagena, Juan Isidro Ros, have presented this morning this center that has the economic support of the City Council in an event that has also had the presence of the Councilor Delegate Services Social and Social Mediation, Carmen Martín del Amor.

The main public that will be served in these new facilities will be homeless people and also people on the street with addictions.

It will have a capacity for 10 people and there will be three additional places that will be reserved for specific emergencies, will open every day in the afternoon, from 20:00 or 21:00 approximately, and will remain operational until the morning.

It is a temporary stay center in which these people can access by three routes, which are: on their own initiative, by the derivation of Caritas in their street work or by derivation of public administration, other social entities or bodies of Security such as the National Police or the Local Police.

Being a center of low demand, it simply requires that there are no aggressions or situations of significant conflict, and also the beneficiaries of the reception will have the option to freely dispose of their time and circulate at their discretion.

Likewise, during the afternoons there will be activities of all kinds, both playful and orientative, in order to help people who are welcome to join society.

The team that will be part of the contracted staff will also try to cover their basic needs in terms of food and hygiene and dignify the person by promoting their personal autonomy.

In addition to several volunteers, there will be contracted personnel, specifically with two social workers, a social educator and two night stands, whose job offers have just come out.

One of the intentions of this center is also to sensitize society about situations of exclusion.

A total of 216,206.33 euros have been invested in its preparation by Caritas, within the housing program of the religious entity in the Region, and an annual maintenance cost of around 143,000 euros is foreseen. Will be financed with own funds, donations from individuals and companies and public subsidies from local and regional administrations.

A SUPPORT NEEDED

The mayor of Cartagena has stated that "for the City of Cartagena to collaborate with the implementation and management of social projects like this one, whose objective is to facilitate the full integration of the most disadvantaged people, is necessary but not mandatory", And recalled that public administrations must "have sufficient sensitivity to lead and bet on projects as necessary as this one."

FUNDS OF THE AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITY FOR SOCIAL AID
