The work of the First Campus of Archeology City of Cartagena begins (03/07/2017)

The councilman of the area of ​​Culture and Heritage, Ricardo Segado, visited this morning the beginning of the work of the University Campus of Practices and Archaeological Training 'City of Cartagena', which will be developed until next July 30 in Monte Sacrum.

Segado has been accompanied by the municipal coordinator of Historical and Archaeological Heritage, Mari Carmen Berrocal.

It should be remembered that, during the last weeks, cleaning and conditioning work has been carried out in the archaeological area that is the object of the Campus, the upper terrace of Monte Sacro.

Ricardo Segado has known the works that are going to perform in this environment and those enrolled in this training action with which he has discussed to know their concerns and the tasks they are going to carry out.

The University Campus of Archaeological Practices and Training 'Ciudad de Cartagena' is organized by the Culture and Heritage area of ​​the City of Cartagena and the municipal society Casco Antiguo, next to the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, University of Murcia and the National University of Education At distance, being the first time that the three public universities of the Region collaborate jointly to develop a Campus.

This is one of the initiatives promoted from the City of Cartagena and Casco Antiguo to act on the Mount Sacro.

In this line, at the end of last year, georadar probes were executed in the area, detecting Roman remains found at a shallow depth (30 centimeters in some cases).

Among the objectives of the Campus are those of an urban nature, since it is going to work to clarify specific areas, terraces and extensive surfaces to see the nature of the remains collected with the georradar and how to preserve them.

In this sense, once studied, the remains, which are located at 30 and 60 centimeters, will be covered to facilitate their protection.

Likewise, there are other historical / archaeological objectives.

The course is organized in practical sessions in the morning (archaeological excavation work and registration of excavation data), while in the afternoon there will be work on inventory and drawing of archaeological materials, knowledge of new technologies applied to archeology, visit To other sites, as well as other theoretical sessions given by professors of recognized prestige.
