The UPCT and Howden celebrate the Women's Engineering Day (28/06/2017)

Graduates, masters and PhD students from the Industrial, Telecommunications and Architecture and Building schools today have made room for the exams to visit the Howden factory for regenerative air preheaters and heaters for power stations and industries in La Union.

The company contacted the Equality Unit of the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT) to invite them to learn about its facilities and work system for students on the occasion of International Women's Day.

The Scottish headquarters of the company celebrates in all its headquarters this day, with which they pretend to counteract the predominance of men in the world of engineering.

"It is important that among decision makers, such as engineers, women are represented.

We need different visions and perspectives, "explained Rafael Costa, Managing Director of Howden Spain.

"Engineering is not something cold, as you think.

We designed to help the human being ", continued the person in charge of the company.

Three engineers trained at the UPCT

The visit included a tour of the factory facilities and talks with the CEO, Human Resources and Marketing managers, as well as the three UPCT engineers and alumni employed in the company.

"In the race we were very few, but we had very good treatment of the teachers and the experience in the Polytechnic was very good", recalls one of them, Cristina Gómez, who attributes to social canons and to the greater predilection of the men by tasks Analysis of the gender imbalance in the profession.

The company has three engineers trained at UPCT: Elena Tomás and Cristina Gómez, industrial engineers, and Cristina Blanco, a civil engineer.

They occupy 20% of engineering positions in the company, which regrets not receiving a greater proportion of women's resumes.

"The only criterion we look at is personal worth," says Costa.

"In the factory we only had two welders in training and they were so good they are going to come back.

I do not understand why there is not more, "he says.

The situation is so rooted in the sector that the facilities had only changing rooms with showers, which has now been unfolded.

Family reconciliation

Faced with the usual obstacles that many women encounter in order to reconcile their professional career with their personal lives, the company gives flexibility to its employees to achieve family reconciliation.

"Our workers can design their hours of entry and exit to the letter, choosing between a continuous day or a day," explains the Human Resources manager, Alfonso Martínez, who also boasts of "virtually no absenteeism" and "100% commitment to The staff when we need it the most. "

"It is unfair that there are women who want to be engineers, not because society does not accompany them," Costa says.

"The family is everyone's responsibility and that our male employees can take their children to school also facilitates the professional performance of their partners," he adds.

"The conciliation is fundamental, but it should be so for men as for women.

The problem is that while there are many women who prioritize their family regarding their career, I have not seen any man refuse a managerial position to take care of their children, "says engineer Cristina Gomez.

In Howden Spain, three women and a man enjoy today a reduction of the day to attend the upbringing.
