"Mathematical models can help doctors decide to remove tumors" The speaker at the congress that hosts the UPCT also studies the biological factors of cellular reprogramming (28/06/2017)

The Congresses of Differential Equations and Applications (CEDYA) and Applied Mathematics (CMA) continue at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) with papers showing the multiplicity of technological fields in which mathematicians conduct research, giving rise to new disciplines, such as The biomathematics, in which Tomas Alarcon Cor, an ICREA researcher at the Center for Mathematical Research in Barcelona has specialized.

The speaker, from the caravaqueño father, makes mathematical models of tumor growth, a novel line of research in Spain.

"We used clinical information from patients to predict the rate of growth of kidney tumors," explains Alarcón.

"Being able to anticipate the evolution of cancer helps to decide between maintenance under observation and partial or total removal of the organ, which has serious contraindications in the case of patients over 60 years," he says.

"These interdisciplinary efforts provide extra tools for doctors to advise patients beyond their professional experience," argues the researcher, who recommends "expanding research at the international level to increase the number of case studies, a recurring problem in the Medical literature ".

However, he trusts that "new statistical methods are trying to solve the methodological complications that generate the heterogeneity of populations in biomedicine," he adds.

The researcher also works by studying the biological factors that trigger the cellular reprogramming that converts somatic cells into stem cells.

"It was believed that it was only possible in the laboratory but it also appears to occur naturally during aging and in certain tumors," he said.
