UPCT professors publish in an international scientific journal a research to improve the efficiency of solar cells with magnetic fields (27/06/2017)

The journal Scientific Reports, from the Nature group, includes in its latest issue an article by three researchers from the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT) on the efficiency of solar cells through the effect of a magnetic field.

The authors of the article 'Magnetic field enhancement of organic photovoltaic cells performance' are Santiago Oviedo, Antonio Urbina and Javier Prior.

In the article, UPCT professors investigate how using certain resonant processes found in photosynthetic biological systems can improve the efficiency of solar cells with active layers based on mixtures of conjugated polymers such as P3HT and C60 derivatives such as PCBM.

The study improves efficiency in power conversion and proposes the use of the magnetic field as a spectroscopic tool, since the interaction of energy levels with the magnetic field (which can be modulated) will allow a better understanding of the processes of photogeneration and transfer Of charge and energy in organic solar cells.

The work was recently awarded at the conference held in Jerusalem 'Quantum effects in biological systems 2017' as the best poster presentation of the prestigious international conference, attended by Javier Prior.

This research was developed entirely by researchers from the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena under the financing of the Seneca Foundation in the call for groups of excellence (Reference: 19882 / GERM / 15) and MINECO (Reference: FIS2015-69512-R, ENE2016 -79282-C5-5-R, including ERDF funds).
