The Minister of Development and Infrastructure, Pedro Rivera, stressed today that the "port of Cartagena is a strategic infrastructure for the development and growth of the Region of Murcia" and noted that it has triggered its activity related to the traffic of goods until 11, 21 million tonnes during the first four months of this year, up 8.9 percent over the same period last year.

This growth is justified by the increase in volume of liquid bulk which has increased by 12.3 percent with 8.96 million tons;

Crude oil, with 5.99 tons, an increase of 18.7 percent, and gas-oíl, which has moved 1.06 tons, 46 percent.

Rivera, who presided together with the President of the Port Authority, Antonio Sevilla, the Board of Directors of the institution, stressed that the regional government wants to "promote, promote and develop projects through the Port of Cartagena because there is a close relationship between the progress of The Region of Murcia and this infrastructure ".

The director explained, "an infrastructure of reference in the world maritime traffic of goods, consolidating us between the four ports of Spain with the largest number of traffic movements of the port system," together with Algeciras, Barcelona and Valencia.

In addition, emphasis was placed on the latest investments that have been made in this port, which "make it today one of the tourist destinations most desired by visitors for its unequaled geographical position and service offer."

In this sense, the regional government and the Port of Cartagena are making a "very important bet" to boost the offer of cruise tourism.

Hence, the expansion of the cruise terminal to accommodate larger ships and a larger number of passengers, up to 7,000 tourists in a single day, has recently been put into service.

The counselor of the Ministry of Presidency and Development said that "we must continue working along this line and promote any action that is destined to seasonalise tourism."
