UPCT receives more than 60 proposals for the new School of Architecture and Building (09/05/2017)

The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) has received more than 60 proposals for the ideas competition for its new School of Architecture and Building (ETSAE), a building that has a budget of six million euros.

The proposals registered come from the entire Spanish geography.

The School of Architecture and Building is currently based in one of the three original buildings of the Campus Alfonso XIII, built in the 60's of the last century.

The needs of the School exceed the capacity of this building, so that teaching and laboratories are spread over five other buildings on different campus of the University.

The new building will be financed by ERDF and UPCT funds.

The fees for the drafting of the Basic and Execution Project, as well as the Faculty Direction, Execution Direction and Coordination of Safety and Health in Works amounted to 364,523.09 euros.

In addition, the top four classified in the ideas contest will receive prizes of between 4,000 and 1,000 euros.

On May 29 will be constituted the jury, which will comprise 13 people and among which will be 6 architects of national and international prestige.

The jury will have two days, on May 30 and 31, to evaluate the proposals received, in the following days will announce the six candidates who will go to the second phase.

The six architects who pass to the second phase will have until summer to make the modifications that are indicated on their projects and once made, the jury will announce the winner of the contest, which will have until the end of the year to develop the project.

The Vice Chancellor of Campus, Marcos Ros, has been satisfied by the degree of acceptance that has had among the professionals of the sector as the recent graduates the contest of ideas.

"An attractive competition has been prepared with guarantees of anonymity, confidentiality and transparency that has allowed the presentation of professionals already consecrated in the sector and recent graduates," he recalled.

The idea contest has maintained transparency since its inception, in fact more than 70 days have been granted to present the proposals and has been publicized in all professional colleges.

"Let's hope that the contestants have presented viable and attractive solutions so that the Polytechnic has a building of Architecture as representative as possible and put the School in the panorama of the architecture schools of the country," he added.

For his part, the director of the ETSAE, Carlos Parra, said he was 'very happy' about the response.

In his opinion, it is an interesting and beautiful project for an architect, who has the possibility of designing a school where he studies Architecture and Building Engineering.

He hopes that 'original' solutions have been proposed and that they make good use of space.
