The church of Santo Domingo hosts the Lessons of Darkness concert (04/04/2017)

The old music group 'La Tempestad', together with the sopranos Olalla Alemán and Mª Eugenia Boix, will perform on Wednesday, April 5 the Lessons of Darkness by François and Lalande Couperin in the military church of Santo Domingo at 20:30 hours .

This is one of the most outstanding pieces of sacred music of the eighteenth century, which is why this event is part of the program of the Year of Enlightenment celebrated in 2017 by the City of Cartagena.

The work, divided in three parts, is destined to be interpreted in the offices of Holy Wednesday;

The first two written for one voice, and the third for two loud voices.

The text that accompanies the music is based on the book of the Lamentations of the Old Testament, attributed to Jeremiah, that moves to the scene of the Calvary of Jesus Christ.

The text of the lessons follows the Lamentations verbatim and also matches the verses with the letters of the Hebrew alphabet: Aleph, Beth, Guimet, Daleth ...

Couperin composed the Lessons by order of the nuns of the convent of Longchamp in 1714, when he was musician of the court of Versailles under the reign of Louis XIV.

Admission is free until capacity is reached.
