Arrested an employer who practically "enslaved" a countryman in an irregular situation in Spain (17/02/2017)

The employee performed days of more than 12 hours, without weekly rest

For those working days Leonon paid his employee 90 cents of euro an hour, from Monday to Sunday, that is 300 euros per month

The National Police in the framework of the coordination and collaboration with the Labor and Social Security Inspectorate proceeded to the arrest of fourteen foreign citizens, of which three were for crimes against workers' rights and documentary misrepresentation.

As a result of the investigations, efforts and information obtained by the police officers, several establishments were detected in the region of Cartagena in which business owners could use and exploit foreign citizens in an irregular situation in Spain.

Once the information received was confirmed, records and inspections were carried out in seven commercial premises, mainly dedicated to the hotel and food industry.

In two of these premises, both located in the neighborhood of Los Dolores, workers were found to have been exploited in unworthy and inhuman conditions, lacking the corresponding labor contract, registered in the Social Security system, being in an irregular situation in Spain and All aspects of the workers' agreement of the relevant sector being violated in respect of them.

In one case, the agents were able to verify that an employer employed, for a year, a Moroccan citizen, working from Monday to Sunday, with workdays of between 10 and 12 hours a day, without rest, contract or discharge in the Security Social, and charging the derisory amount of 10 euros a day, which translates into barely ninety cents an hour.

The foreign citizen, because of his precarious economic situation, family burdens in Morocco and irregular stay, was forced to accept such working conditions, not having dared to denounce the facts so far.

Another employer of Pakistani nationality was also detained for similar acts, as well as another citizen of the same nationality who used a compatriot's residence card to work instead of this in one of the controlled trades.

In addition, eleven citizens of different nationalities were also detained for various violations of the Aliens Act, with the corresponding proceedings leading to expulsion.

The actions were carried out by the Local Aliens and Borders Brigade of the Police National Police in Cartagena along with the Labor Inspection of Murcia.
