MC will propose the declaration of the Latin Sailing as a Property of Intangible Cultural Interest (16/02/2017)

The MC Municipal Group, through the mayor Ricardo Segado, will propose, next Thursday, February 23, that the Town Hall Plenary insists to the general direction of Cultural Property of the CARM to the declaration of the Latin Sail on the Cartagena coast as Good Of Intangible Cultural Interest.

Segado recalled that "although we can not determine with precision the true origin of the Latin sail, all historical data seem to indicate that these boats sailed the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean long before their first representations. The eighteenth century was the type of sail that was used in cabotage transport by the Mediterranean, resisting until the middle of the nineteenth century on boats used for fishing.

The councilman of MC has continued to state that "during that century, fishermen showed their skill along the coast of Cartagena in regattas with boats of 42 palms and since then the image of the Latin sail sailing our waters has A long season, ranging from May to October, where participants measure their strength to be the best in the water aboard boats of 21, 33 and 42 spans, their expertise in the difficult art of the Latin sail is Awarded with trophies like the Silver Carabela and others. "

Similarly, Ricardo Segado recalled that "in 2016 the project 'Cartagena, the tradition of the sea' took place in the neighborhood of Santa Lucía, framed in the municipal program Tiempo Libre Alternativo, which allowed eighteen young people from eleven communities Autonomous to know the historical-cultural heritage of the city, navigation and fishing in the area, collaborating even in the restoration of a sailboat. "

Segado has recognized "the work of various entities such as the Association of Friends of the Latin Sail and nautical clubs such as Santa Lucia, Los Nietos or La Puntica in their struggle to keep the Latin sail alive, a heritage of Mediterranean culture."

"As a result of its effort and involvement in the recovery of an ancestral tradition, we now enjoy a very important fleet, which is increased each year, of boats of 42 spans. The restoration and recovery of these sailboats that, little by little , Are joining the fleet and the number of participants in the races, increasing each year, demonstrates the importance that the maintenance of these ships and this tradition have for the heritage of the Region, "he assured.

It should be remembered that the Generalitat Valenciana declared in 2016 as Cultural Heritage intangible heritage the artisanal fishing and sailing of the Albufera in Latin America, considering it an area of special protection and requiring the support of the administration for the preservation of cultural realities Threatened.

Likewise, the Canary Islands Government declared Cultural Sailing as part of the archipelago's ethnographic heritage, because of its undeniable immaterial value associated with navigational techniques and knowledge rooted in the traditional culture of the Canarian people.

In this sense, said Ricardo Segado, "in the protection of Latin sailing on our shores the requirements of both autonomous communities come together to urge their declaration as a Property of Intangible Cultural Interest."

Mowed has finalized listed as proponents of this MC proposal "the necessary support from the Autonomous Community to preserve this cultural reality, the fact that the Mar Menor, where many of the Latin sailing regattas are developed, is included in the area The number of events related to the culture around these events, such as photography competitions, painting and cauldrons in the Nautical Week of the Mar Menor in Los Urrutias, the effort of the citizens in their preservation and Diffusion making regattas one of the biggest cultural events of the summer season and, why not say, inspiration in our old windmills, dumb witnesses of administrative abandonment, who deployed four Latin candles in their eight poles.
