There will be guided visits to Cueva Victoria on the last Saturdays of each month (03/01/2017)

The mayor of Cartagena José López and the councilor of Tourism Obdulia Gómez visited this morning along with a hundred people the Victoria Cave in a free visit that has been made to bring the public this cave-mine of great geological and paleontological interest.

The visit has been guided by the General Coordinator of Historical and Archaeological Heritage Maria del Carmen Berrocal.

And the expert and collaborator of the excavation Andrés Ros.

The visitors have been able to get acquainted with the experts in this enclave, of great geological and paleontological interest, in whose interior more than 90 animal species of the quaternary period have been found, which makes it one of the most important deposits of this period to European level.

José López has announced the opening of the deposit to the public, through guided tours for a small number of people, which will be held every last Saturday of each month and whose plazas can be booked at the Municipal Archaeological Museum.

The mayor has also indicated the interest that exists in collaborating with different administrations that can collaborate with the work carried out in it.

He highlighted the intention of the Consistory to obtain European funds to carry out studies on climate change that could serve to better understand this phenomenon today.

He also stressed the importance of making compatible the tourist interest of this enclave with the interests of other collaborating administrations so that the visitors not only can know the cave, but also see archaeologists and students of universities "that can make fields Work and get their loans in Cartagena. "

The mayor also indicated the intention to create even a route that although this enclave with other places of tourist interest in the area, "so that tourism is not only in Cartagena" but also reaches other municipalities of the Region.

The coordinator of this project, María del Carmen Berrocal, highlighted the great importance of this deposit as one of the most important in the Region, "since in it we can observe the evolution from hundreds of thousands of years to our days" , Through the discoveries of animal remains of more than 800,000 years and of the works of mining realized until barely a century.

In this regard he invited citizens to visit the temporary exhibition "Cueva Victoria: Out of Africa" ​​at the Municipal Archaeological Museum, which can be visited until February 15, and which can be seen from the remains of large mammals Of African origin to the phalanx of a hominid of great paleontological interest.
