Cartagena was the place where the International University of the Sea (UNINMAR) began its journey, back in 1984. For this reason, the Cartagena City Council has been distinguished as the founding seat of this educational project that, over the years, Has consolidated as a reference in the scientific and cultural study of the different areas of knowledge.
The rector of the University of Murcia, Jose Orihuela has been in charge of delivering the plaque of this recognition to the mayor of Cartagena, José López, Wednesday, December 21, at the Consistorial Palace.
The event was attended, in turn, by the vice-rectors of the UM, Pedro Miralles and Francisca Tomás, among other assistants.
The first mayor has highlighted the spectacular growth that has experienced this institution that has offices spread throughout the region where about 80 courses are taught and without doubt make up a very important educational offer.
In addition, Lopez has highlighted the quality of the program of activities that, according to the mayor, goes beyond mere academicism and transcends the traditional university space, attracting various sectors of society and creating a more open society.
In turn, the mayor has highlighted the qualities that led to Cartagena to host the birth of this great adventure of knowledge, such as its marine character and its strong international profile, as well as other incentives such as tourism, gastronomy and sport.
Factors that, for Lopez, contribute to make more attractive the stay of the students in Cartagena.
FUTURE POINTS OF UNIMAR
For his part, the rector of the University of Murcia has expressed the desire to culminate the growth process of the International University of the Sea by giving it greater visibility in Cartagena.
Orihuela has expressed his hope that UNIMAR will have a permanent seat in the city and that the courses will be extended throughout the year.

The International University of the Sea aims to be a scientific and cultural reference point, contributing to strengthen the idea of ​​a university open to the society that supports it.
In this way, it brings to the society a large and select proposal of activities that deal with themes corresponding to the different areas of knowledge, approaching all corners of the Region of Murcia and even crossing its borders, with the highest levels of rigor, Quality and innovation, and turning each venue into a scenario of national and international discussion.
