Citizen spokesman in Cartagena, Manuel Padín, explained that "the San Antón Prison has been the subject of numerous ideas and has been part of the electoral promises of the parties that make up the local government, but the reality is that today, Mid-December 2016, continues to be a building without reform, abandoned and useless "

The orange formation will take to the next municipal plenary several initiatives to know the state of the negotiations on this construction between the Society of Infrastructures and Penitentiary Equipment, owner of the building, and the City of Cartagena

In June 2010, the Prison of San Antón closed its doors definitively.

Almost from the very moment of its closure, speculations about its future have happened in a constant way.

The first one was pronounced by the director of this penitentiary center, Francisco Marín, who proposed a workshop school, as an administrative branch of the Guillermo Miranda Social Insertion Center in Murcia.

Only one month after this announcement, the Ministry of Interior issued the order in the BOE but was never carried out.

Since then, almost all municipal groups in the City Council have announced their own project for the property, the Movimento Ciudadano party reported in 2013, through its then spokesman, Jose López, that the City Council should claim ownership of this property and proposed Which will house the Historic Photographic Center of the Region of Murcia (Cehiform).

The last of the ideas comes from the current Socialist deputy mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, who during the election campaign of May 2015 promised that if he acceded to the post he held for a year and a half would project "a Multicultural Space where different groups Of the neighborhood and citizens have spaces for the plastic, musical or literary creation for the use and enjoyment of the old prison cells that will become units for social inclusion workshops for minorities living in this area.

Castejón then said that this project went through "an agreement of use" and enjoy the facilities with the general secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions.

Citizen spokesman in Cartagena, Manuel Padín, explained that "the old prison of San Antón has been the subject of numerous ideas by the different political formations over the years, in order to give it a new use, but The reality is that today, in mid-December 2016, Penitentiary Institutions continue to fail to fulfill its obligation to maintain and care for it, it continues to be an unreformed, abandoned and useless place. "

"We are surprised by the amount of time that has passed since the PSOE and MC arrived at the Government of Cartagena and the little that has been spoken about this project, and I sincerely believe that now is a very opportune moment to ask these questions, to give in Definite due explanations to the citizens, "said the local spokesman.

Citizens will ask in the next Municipal Plenary what state the procedures are, if any, with the Society of Infrastructures and Penitentiary Equipment (SIEP), under the Ministry of Interior, for possible assignment of use or acquisition of the property and if it has been taken And to some final decision on the part of this municipal government to give a specific future to the former provincial prison, and in charge of what accounts will be made the necessary reform of this construction.
