Promotion highlights the relevance of the Port of Cartagena as an essential infrastructure for export (13/12/2016)

The Minister underlines the importance of the project for the construction of a container basin in El Gorguel, which "will make the Region a reference in maritime transport"

The Minister of Development and Infrastructures, Pedro Rivera, today highlighted the relevance of the Port of Cartagena as a platform for the export of products of the Region to markets around the world and stressed "the Government's commitment to this essential infrastructure for economic development region of".

The holder of the Fomento accompanied the Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Transport and Housing, Julio Gómez-Pomar, the President of Ports of the State, José Llorca, and the president of the Port Authority of Cartagena, Antonio Sevilla, during a visit to the works Access to Escombreras.

The port of Cartagena is leader in freight transport in the bulk modality.

In addition, Rivera said that the construction of a container basin in El Gorguel "is a strategic project that will allow to multiply the current capacity of the port in storage and loading and unloading of containers and will make the Region a benchmark in maritime transport."

This infrastructure, which provides for its connection with the Mediterranean Corridor and with the Logistics Activities Area planned in Cartagena and Murcia, "will involve the creation of almost 3,000 direct and indirect jobs and about 20,000 induced."

Works in Escombreras

The railway access works to Escombreras conclude the railway connection of the expansion of Escombreras and allow the necessary link to promote intermodality and offer the shipment of goods along the existing line towards Madrid and other destinations.

In addition, this connection will be essential for the future Mediterranean Corridor.

"All these works will allow to further strengthen the leadership of the Port of Cartagena," said the director.

The works, which extend from the new docks of the expansion to the station of Adif in Escombreras, consist of the construction of the platform in those areas where they lack and the superstructure of the whole set, including ballast, lanes, sleepers, Signage and security features.

Also, an improvement of the terminal of Adif in Escombreras is included.

The main work of rail access to Escombreras involves a total investment of more than 21.9 million euros from the Financial Fund for Land Port Accessibility, a fund that also allows financing the ongoing works of the variant of Camarillas, whose investment is Amounted to 35.8 million euros.
