They design a new School of Architecture that permeabiliza the campus Alfonso XIII and allows its urban use (21/11/2016)

The new architect by the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT) José Inglés Ingles has designed the School of Architecture and Building in which he would have liked to study.

His final career work not only projects a new building, but also reorders the campus of Alfonso XIII to open it to the city.

"The goal is for the city to enter the University," says the director of work, Pau Natividad Vivó.

"The campus was built on what was the outskirts of the city, now it has to be integrated into the urban fabric," he adds.

"The rehabilitation of other buildings of the Polytechnic has been very beneficial to revitalize Cartagena," recalls the professor.

The student has left the project of building a new headquarters for the UPCT's Technical School of Architecture and Construction, which is planned to be built on the current campus library of Alfonso XIII.

Its design "respects the rest of buildings, with a similar height and maintaining the original image of the campus", explains the student.

"The building, with structural concrete diaphragms and aluminum slats for sun protection, would be shaped like a hand that embraces the central space in which the current tree would be preserved.

The ground floor would be permeable to allow the transit between Carlos III and Paseo, with spaces of general use, such as an auditorium, an exhibition hall, a reprography or a cafeteria, "he details.

The intervention would extend to aulario B and to the current School of Architecture and Building, in whose ground floor would be located the library of the campus and whose patio would recover its use and original dimensions.

"It is an ambitious proposal, with complex constructive solutions, but achievable in normal financial circumstances," says the director of work, who in any case hopes that the final project for the School will use the analysis of the deficiencies and opportunities of the campus that has made The student and start from the same conditions of respect and revaluation of the environment.

Inside, the planned building would be completely oriented to architectural teaching, with "classrooms and workshops adapted to practical teaching and cross-classes in which students from different courses can share ideas and discuss their projects," says the tutor.

"A School of Architecture requires spaces very different from those of traditional teaching, with teachers imparting the lesson on a blackboard and static students," he concludes.
