A study with georradar will allow to know the existence of Roman remains in the Holy Mount (09/11/2016)

In the next 48 hours, a study based on probes of georadar will be carried out all over the Monte Sacro slope, in order to know if there are any Roman remains in the area to be able to define future actions.

This morning the mayor of Cartagena, José López, and the municipal coordinator of Archaeological Heritage, María del Carmen Berrocal, accompanied by the Councilor for Archaeological Heritage, Ricardo Segado, have visited these works to be carried out on a plot of 14,500 square meters.

The study, conducted by a team of archaeological experts led by the Professor in Prehistory and Director of the Archaeological Research and Archaeological Research Center of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Teresa Chapa, consists of a set of georadar tours with An antenna of 600 Mhz that are georeferenced by means of a GPS.

The georradar will allow to determine in a meter and a half of depth the remains that are, and to know in which zones there is a greater archaeological level to be able to do works of planning in the zone.

This is a first step in this area of ​​Monte Sacro important for Cartagena, as indicated by the mayor, José López, to be able to continue advancing and act in the area with groups of archaeologists and methods not invasive.

In spite of the little knowledge of the archeology of this area of ​​the Monte Sacro, Berrocal has indicated that Roman remains could be found pertaining to staggered houses, as there are in other slopes of Cartagena realized by use of the space, reason why it is tried to know where they go The streets and where there are terraces higher or lower to be able to plan the excavation.

After these two days of work, data processing will last 15 to 20 days.

The mayor said that after this study, "we can tell the Cartagena people that we have a large archaeological park again to marry El Molinete and make a large archaeological site or we have a parcels perfectly prepared for sale because they will not give problems to the builders"

The work area is delimited from the Park Square to the Serreta towards Monte Sacro.

For this reason, there will be during these two days traffic cuts that will affect the streets of the area and the impossibility of parking in Monte Sacro.

OTHER ISSUES

The mayor of Cartagena, José López, has responded to the questions posed by journalists in favor of the FEVE arriving in Cabo de Palos and La Manga and helping to reduce traffic pressure and even in the future could be located in the Station of Víctor Beltrí.
