A UPCT study points to the need to extend the FEVE line to La Manga (08/11/2016)

In a survey carried out in the municipality of Cartagena, along the narrow gauge railway line, on the use of this public transport service, its possible expansion to La Manga and the impact of this project on the local economy , 87 percent of the 100 people interviewed are in favor of expanding the current line, according to the final grade paper by Juan Carlos Castillo, a student of Business Administration and Management, which analyzes the convenience and benefits of the project.

The UPCT student did his field work during the summer months, during which time the population in the coastal area grew from 20,000 to 200,000 inhabitants and faced numerous difficulties due to lack of data and documentation, he explains. The professor of the Faculty of Sciences of the Company, Fernando López that along with Mª Angeles Palacios has been the directors of this work.

The study shows the low level of knowledge of the population regarding this means of transport in terms of schedules and rates and especially of tourists.

"We did not find any statistics on the use of the service or the number of users and the company did not respond to our requests for information."

The data collected in the work show a small percentage of travelers in the line of FEVE and public transport that communicates Cartagena and La Manga.

However, the results indicate that the number of users would increase by 70 percent if the route is extended.

The study also confirms that businesses in the area would benefit, increasing the number of tourists.

88% of the population also links the improvement of the rail service with the reduction of pollution and traffic problems in summer at the entrance of La Manga.

"Work is a wake-up call, we try to move consciousness.

We speak of an excellent and practically unknown public transport service that can be a great alternative, for example to the current problems of traffic in the accesses to La Manga ", concludes Fernando López.
