Student UPCT hired by the CETENMA optimizes biogas production in anaerobic digestion (31/10/2016)

Barbara Canovas has based its Final Year in experiments during their practices in the technological center of the Energy and Environment

The student of Chemical Industrial Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) Barbara Canovas Gonzalez has demonstrated in his Final Project that the use of certain waste optimizes the anaerobic digestion of sludge in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) stations digesters anaerobes.

Empirical evidence that the student did during his internship at the Technology Center for Energy and Environment (CETENMA), has already had a real plasmación, because the tested waste is being used to improve the production of biogas that some EDAR produce .

"The process is technically and economically feasible," says Maria Jose Escasaín, technical R & D + i CETENMA and who led the study of the student.

"The management of the waste is cheapened between 15 and 20 cents per ton, generating revenues for both sewage treatment residue as the greater quantity and quality of biogas" details.

"Very few centers experiment with waste to improve production of biogas," notes researcher CETENMA, who is doing a thesis on waste recovery.

"You always do a preliminary study to validate the process according to the type of sludge and waste," he says.

The student conducted his research using mixing CETENMA digesters, which simulate those of the sewage, sludge and waste used to generate biogas.

"The important thing is that the waste contains a lot of organic matter to feed the bacteria metanogenéticas" says the new engineer, who has been hired by the technology center straight after the race.

"Almost all researchers who are engaged in CETENMA have previously done internships or scholarships," says Escasaín.

"In fact, now we are looking for new college students," he says.

"Our fellows do analysis of water and waste, collaborate on writing projects or energy audits, produce newsletters for our partner companies ... they are perfectly integrated into the areas of energy, environment and quality R & D + i" summarizes the researcher.

"I like the work in the laboratory, especially because it has industrial application," says Canovas, who said "what I studied in the UPCT has helped me to understand the processes that have learned to use here."

"Graduates in Industrial Engineering Chemistry have a very versatile training that allow them to function in many different areas of industry," notes Professor Jose Luis Serrano, co-director of Final Year.
