Teachers and researchers meet in Chemical Engineering at the Polytechnic of Cartagena (15/09/2016)

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) organizes this week the thirty-fourth annual day of this specialty.

About 65 teachers and researchers from Spanish universities share between Wednesday and Friday new teaching methodologies and reflect on training, accreditation, employability and internationalization of chemical engineers.

"Large companies with factories in the region, such as Repsol, Sabic, Tecnicas Reunidas, Hero and Licor 43 will explain what competencies they expect to have our students are," says organizing committee chairman, Juan Ignacio Moreno, advancing one of the tables XXXIV round of the Conference of Chemical Engineering.

"Most of our graduates employed quickly in one or two months after completing their studies.

Today I talked to the same two students who have been recruited before submitting the final degree project, "added the former director of the Department of Chemical Engineering of the UPCT.

"But big companies are increasingly demanding a master as a specific complement to general training grade" he qualifies.

Imparts Polytechnic degree in Chemical Industrial Engineering and Master in Environmental Engineering and Environmental Processes.

The study 'Labour insertion of university students' prepared by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports reveals that currently 67.2% of graduates in Chemical Engineering in positions related to their education, enjoying 59.7% of permanent contracts and 40.3%, temporary.

The salaries of these professionals range between 25,000 and 32,000 euros a year.

Thus, a recent graduate in Chemical Engineering have an average salary of € 25,737 annual gross.

A large majority, namely 99% of graduates in Chemical Engineering practicing in the private sector;

another 1% remaining a place in the public administration.

The degree also enables the development of professional activity as a teacher.

The thirty teachers from the Department of Chemical Engineering of the UPCT teaches in the schools of Industrial Engineering, Roads and Mines, Navales, agronomists, Architecture and Building.

"Even in the Faculty of Business coordinate the Masters in Occupational Health and Safety" said Moreno.

Indeed, the conference will be held in the auditorium of the Faculty.

The opening and presentation will be held on Thursday 15 at 9 am.

"The size of a chemical engineering project is huge"

Among the papers presented at the conference highlights the former Director General of Universities of the Region Luis Javier Lozano, on teaching activities at the work end of degree in Chemical Engineering.

"They are large-scale projects, greater than those of other engineering, because industrial plants are designed in full," explains professor UPCT.

"Theoretically TFG load is 360 hours, but in practice the students have difficulty combining it with other subjects and few conclude in July," he explains.

"In Catalonia spend a semester exclusively to TFG" he says.

"In the Polytechnic University of Cartagena we are distributing the workload in groups of students, allowing them all project elements while technically focus on one party, later to merge their designs with the rest of companions ", Explain.
