The MAPS European project progresses measures for the recovery of the Moorish Castle and the neighborhood of Los Mateos (13/09/2016)

The local group of Cartagena project MAPS (Military Assets as Public Spaces) met yesterday at the headquarters of theAssociation Rascasa, to advance the development of the second phase, in which the European plan for the rehabilitation of areas is immersed military abandoned in degraded areas.

The meeting was led by the manager of the municipal company Casco Antiguo, Antonio Garcia.

This entity is responsible for coordinating the MAPS project in Cartagena.

Garcia says that accommodates the local group, through various institutions, social, heritage conservation, the business of the city and the tourist aspect.

Also, with laparticipación UPCT, through its School of Architecture, will be proposed in different subjects work whose object of study and analysis is the Cerro de los Moros, both the castle and town planning of the neighborhood.

PROJECT PHASES

The City Council joined last year to this project in its first phase, led by the Italian city dePiacenza, and in which Varazdin (Croatia) and Szombathely (Hungary) were also, all directed by the architect and expert Luca Lanzoni, designated by the European Union.

The work of the first phase involved the identification of military space for public use containing social exclusion.

In the case of Cartagena the Moorish Castle and the Los Mateos as an ideal place to develop the project he was chosen.

Once located space, local working group, which has gradually grown to be currently composed of various institutions and entities such as the City Council through City Hall, the area of ​​Culture and Heritage and the Department of Social Services was formed, AFORCA (Veterans Association Friends Cartageneros Castles), the UPCT (Polytechnic University of Cartagena), the Chamber of Commerce and charities working in Los Mateos as Rascasa and the Phoenix Group.

Looking ahead to the second phase, which began last June and will end in June 2018, the cities of Espinho (Portugal), Koblenz (Germany), Longford (Ireland), Serres (Greece) and Telsiai (Lithuania) joined .

CARTAGENA, VENUE OF THE FIRST SEMINAR

In the second phase, seminars will be held in different cities that are part of the project MAPS.En this sense, Cartagena will host the first, namely on 5 and 6 October, which will include representatives and experts from each of the European partners.

The main objective is to show the Moorish Castle and the Los Mateos to collect the views of all participants about the proposals for action that emerged from the local group and were reflected in the survey with you.

Also, the local group of Cartagena is scheduled to travel to other seminars for a more efficient work.

Antonio Garcia says the intention is, once the second phase, starting a third in which they begin to develop all aspects previously addressed.
