The Museum of Roman Theatre in Cartagena honors Piranesi, the master engraver (04/06/2016)

The Museum of the Roman Theatre in Cartagena opens next Wednesday, June 8, the exhibition Piranesi, the rediscovery of Rome '.

The exhibition will be open until 10 October and is designed from the special relationship between antiquity, exemplified by the Roman Theatre in Cartagena, and the work of Italian Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778), for their essential role in the rediscovery of Rome.

Curated by Nacho Ruiz, the sample has ten engravings by Piranesi from the Museum of Fine Arts of Murcia (Mubam) and a series of etchings and lithographs from the private collection that the T20 Gallery Murcia has provided for the realization of this Roman Theatre project, managed by the Foundation that make up the autonomous region, the City of Cartagena and the Cajamurcia Foundation.

The Director General of Cultural Property and member of the board of the Foundation, Maria Comas, explained that "this show wants to take one of the great masters of art history one of the great buildings of antiquity" and explained that " the organization of temporary exhibitions and other activities that complement the permanent collection and the monument of the Roman Theatre itself are allowing significantly increase the number of visitors to this iconic space through which we hope to pass this year more than 200,000 people and already it has become one of the most visited museums in Spain. "

With 'Piranesi, the rediscovery of Rome', visitors can immerse themselves in the history and evolution of the art, from etching to the photolithography.

An ordered chronologically block allow those who come to the Museum of the Roman Theater discover these decisive steps to the art of print and lithography step in the nineteenth century.

The project, which also works the Iberdrola Foundation, has great archaeological interest, since the selection of pieces, starting with the Venetian master himself, allow observe the evolution of the city and the relationship of time with the prominence of the ruins.

The exhibition opens on Wednesday at 20:00 pm and can be visited at the Teatro Romano Cartagena Museum until next October 10 from Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 20:00, and on Sundays, DE10 : 00 to 14:00.

Master engraver

Giovanni Battista Piranesi is considered one of the great writers of history and his work influences like few others in the evolution of aesthetic trends from the eighteenth century onwards, perpetuating an image of classicism in architecture that still are in the English countryside, in large buildings in Washington or in the palaces of St. Petersburg.

Piranesi was also the great diffuser and responsible for the reinvention of the city as a universal model through the dissemination of his work.

Beyond its enormous size, much of his work is rooted in the dissemination of images, the precedent of 'souvenir' current.

Piranesi claimed the greatness of Republican Rome and the primacy of the great works of engineering.

His collections of engravings traveled for two centuries bringing with them the ideal of the primacy of the Roman on the Greek, marking a technical milestone and becoming models copied in academies and schools.

One of these collections, which will be exhibited in the Museum of Roman theater, then came to Murcia Provincial Museum, now the Museum of Fine Arts of the Ministry of Culture, where it is kept.
