International journal Nature publishes a genetic research Plants UPCT (27/05/2016)

The international journal Nature Plants collected in its latest issue, published today, an article signed by professors of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) Julia Weiss and Mark Egea Gutiérrez-Cortines.

The research, entitled "Insight into the evolution of the Solanaceae from the parental genomes of Petunia hybrida 'has been made during the past six years by an international consortium of 58 researchers from a dozen countries on several continents to develop the sequencing project parental Petunia hybrida and four commercial lines of this species.

"Genetic research petunia has had great relevance since the 80s as a molecular tool to elucidate the function and identity of the genes involved in the synthesis of pigments such as anthocyanins, which are the basis of the quality of red wines, red and antioxidant nutritional fruits of enormous importance, "explains the researcher UPCT Julia Weiss.

"One of the characteristics of the petunia is their survival in very different climates," adds the professor, who along with Marcos Egea completed annotation related to climate change adaptation genes.

"These genes are called circadian clock, a network that coordinates the responses of living to changes in light, temperature and nutrients organisms," says the professor of the School of Agriculture of the Polytechnic.

Both researchers from the Department of Agricultural Science and Technology and members of the Institute of Plant Biotechnology (IBV) are working in the control of circadian clock growth and emission of odor compounds, "fundamental to the quality of food and the way plants have to communicate with the rest of the world, "concludes Egea.

The sequencing project was funded by national and regional programs of research support;

in the case of the UPCT, by the Seneca and the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness Foundation.
