The Foundation for Pluralism and Coexistence local government presented a study on religious diversity in Cartagena (14/04/2016)

The mayor of Cartagena, Jose Lopez, along with several of the councilors of the government team, held in the afternoon yesterday, April 13, a meeting with members of the Foundation for Pluralism and Coexistence to analyze the efforts that have been made by of the entity since the last meeting, held last January.

It is the second time this year, the heads of the Foundation for Pluralism and Coexistence meet with the municipal government to address the management of religious diversity, leaving demonstrates the clear commitment to take over as administration unmodelo management adjusted to the principles constitutional and legislative framework governing the exercise of the Right to Religious Freedom in Spain and Respect for Diversity, as shown by its participation in the Intercultural Cities Network of Spain.

Along with Lopez were present Deputy Mayor, Ana Belén Castejon, Councillor of the Quality of Life, Francisco Calderon, Councillor for Public Safety, Francisco Aznar, the Councillor for Social Services and Social Mediation, Carmen Martin and technicians Department of Social Services and Local Police.

In the last three months, the foundation has conducted a study of religious diversity in Cartagena.

The goal of this meeting was to present the government team the results of this study, which was carried out by technicians from the foundation through visits and interviews with minoritariasexistentes different religious communities in the city of Cartagena, which are 43. they have identified 45 places of worship, with the following distribution: 19 Muslim confessions, 18 evangelical denominations, 2 Jehovah's Witnesses, 1 of Mormon, 1 Buddhist, 1 Fe Baha'is, 1 Adventists and two other minority.

Cartagena, ranks 17 of the Spanish cities with the highest number of places of worship and diversity of religious denominations in the territory.

For this reason the Federation of Municipalities and Provinces of Spain and the Foundation for Pluralism and Coexistence, under the Ministry of Justice, betting that Cartagena is one of 10 cities that are part of a program where incorporate in their diversity work the religious question.

In the report submitted to the municipal government proposals for further progress in this area they are made, so that the different recommendations made will be you value by the government team in order to develop actions on this matter over the coming months.

Also, in the morning, a technical training seminar was held to also show attendees the results of the study, the meeting was attended by 40 professionals from different municipal areas.

The training was given by Fernando Arias, director of the Foundation for Pluralism and Coexistence;

Puerto Garcia, assistant director of the foundation and Mercedes Murillo, Technical Advisor of the General Department of Relations with the Confessions, the Ministry of Justice and representatives of the various religious denominations.

the issue of governance of religious freedom at the local level are addressed: an approach from the plurality of beliefs in the city of Cartagena, addressing issues such as regulatory and competence framework of the right to religious freedom in Spain;

the role of local government in securing the effective exercise of the rights of believers and communities, and a round table where an approach was made to the different confessions present in Cartagena.

The Foundation for Pluralism and Coexistence, an entity of the state sector, created by agreement of the Council of Ministers of 15 October 2004, at the proposal of the Ministry of Justice.

Its main objective is to promote the realization of the right to religious freedom and establish itself as a research service, discussion and implementation of public policies on religious diversity and conscience.

To do this, we work in three areas: with minority lasconfesiones, society in general and also with public administrations.
