[The Cartagena City Council accompanies AFAL families on World Alzheimer's Day (21/09/2021)

| The association estimates that in the municipality more than 7,000 people suffer from some type of dementia and it increasingly affects those under 50 years of age | The mayor, Noelia Arroyo, and the delegate councilor for Social Services, Mercedes García, have visited today, Tuesday, September 21, the facilities of the Day Center that the Association of Family and Friends of Alzheimer's and other Diseases of Cartagena and the Region (AFAL) has in the Mediterranean Urbanization on the occasion of World Alzheimer's Day. In this way, the Cartagena City Council has shown its support for families who suffer closely from this harsh disease and which, according to the association has calculated, directly affects more than 7,000 people in the municipality and indirectly more than 21,000, among family members.

and patient caregivers. After the tour, the councilor Mercedes García explained that “we really liked how this center works, which was provided by the Cartagena City Council and that they have been able to prepare and adapt to their needs, since they provide individualized attention to its users with which they seek to stop the spread of the disease and also provide assistance to families ”. The mayor recalled that more and more people under the age of 50 and even 40 are suffering from some type of dementia.

"Now, this disease manifests itself in people of younger ages and it is very important to work as soon as possible to slow down the development of the disease and provide all the help that is necessary to those affected and their families." From AFAL, its manager, Raúl Nieto, thanked the visit of the mayor and the councilor, "as well as the collaboration of the Cartagena City Council that, in addition to municipal subsidies, has left us facilities like these." And he stressed that "today we especially want to make ourselves known to the citizens of Cartagena so that they know that here they can inform and orient themselves about this disease." Among the objectives of the association, in addition to promoting research, it stands out to reduce the impact of the disease, helping to improve the quality of life of patients and their family caregivers and the exercise of all their rights, favoring the maintenance of the patient in their environment for as long as possible, promoting contributing to their autonomy, as well as recognizing, valuing and protecting the person who cares for the Alzheimer's patient. The Cartagena City Council develops joint actions with AFAL, an association that has nearly 25 years of experience in non-pharmacological treatment services for Alzheimer's patients and that has covered more than 3,000 people throughout the municipality this year.
