[Repsol completes the scheduled shutdown of the lubricants area at the Cartagena refinery (15/03/2021)

More than 30 contractor companies, mostly local, have participated in the work carried out in recent weeks, which has allowed the revision of seven units of the two lubricant plants, and the incorporation of new equipment.

In addition to Repsol's own workforce, an average of 400 people worked at the stop per day, with 500 workers at the top.

The Cartagena refinery has allocated close to 15 million euros to this scheduled shutdown, which has involved the inspection of more than a hundred equipment and five process furnaces, and the development of important maneuvers, such as the replacement of a 19-foot tower.

meters high.

The director of the refinery, Antonio Mestre, has assured that these works, together with the construction of the first advanced biofuel plant in Spain, with an investment of 188 million euros, "reflect Repsol's commitment to the development of the industrial sector in Cartagena and the Region of Murcia, and the commitment to local employment ".

The Cartagena refinery has completed the scheduled shutdown of its lubricants area.

The works, which have lasted for just over a month, have required the support of some thirty contracting companies, mostly local, who have employed 400 people on average daily, reaching 500 at peak times.

These professionals, under the supervision of the workers of the Repsol refinery in Cartagena, have reviewed more than a hundred pieces of equipment, highlighting five process furnaces in which outstanding maneuvers have been carried out, such as changing the tower into one of the they.

The good planning of the works and the development of the maneuver, with two cranes of 160 and 60 tons, respectively, has made it possible to successfully move and install a tower 19 meters high and about 11 tons in weight.

Another important work has been the change of the refractory of one of the furnaces, the installation of enveloping sections of more than three meters in diameter, and the introduction of technological improvements in one of the substations, whose function is to supply the electrical equipment of unit.

As a novelty, a mobile application called 'Supervisor Task' has been launched for the first time, which has been created expressly for stops made at Repsol refineries.

This digital tool, aimed at supervisors, has been installed on the special mobile devices used in the plants.

With the new application, Repsol professionals can, on site, check the progress of work, update material lists or control work permits.

In this way, it is no longer necessary to go to the office to report information electronically to the departments involved in the tasks, improving work efficiency and optimizing employee time.

The director of the refinery, Antonio Mestre, has ensured that, with the completion of the inspection and maintenance work, and the implementation of the planned investments, the refinery is more efficient, guaranteeing its proper functioning for a new cycle of activity .

Mestre highlighted that, of the 14.8 million in the budget for the shutdown, about 6 million have been used to incorporate technological improvements and energy efficiency.

For the director of the refinery, these works, together with other projects such as the investment of 188 million for the construction of the first advanced biofuels plant in Spain, "reflect Repsol's commitment to the development of the industrial sector in Cartagena and the Region.

of Murcia, and the commitment to local employment ".

Everyday products One of the singularities of the Cartagena refinery is its conversion capacity, since all the product that reaches its facilities is converted into other by-products that are used to manufacture materials and goods that society uses in its day-to-day life.

In the lubricants unit, lubricating oil bases are obtained for use in Spain and for export.

In addition, other products come from this plant, such as paraffins that are used in industries such as textiles, food and cosmetics; bitumens for paving, or the raw material needed to make tires.

Currently, from the lubricants plant of the Cartagena refinery, more than 60% of the total production is exported to 26 countries.

International growth Repsol leads the sale of lubricants in the Iberian Peninsula, with a 25% share in Spain and 19% in Portugal in 2020.

The Lubricants area is the most international of the multi-energy group since it has commercial activity in 78 countries.

Precisely, last year, despite the collapse of mobility due to the confinements decreed due to the pandemic, its international expansion allowed it to grow.

In 2020 Repsol sold 193,000 tons of lubricants, which represents a growth of 40% compared to 2015.

The acquisition of 40% of the Mexican company Bardahl in 2018, and 40% of United Oil in 2019 -based in Singapore and preferential presence in Indonesia-, was a step forward in the growth strategy.

In 2020, 30% of the volume sold was obtained through these two investees.

This year this international expansion will be consolidated, focusing on Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Romania, Indonesia, Mexico, Thailand, Colombia, Peru and Brazil.

The goal is to achieve total lubricant sales of more than 300,000 tons by 2025.
