The president of the APC, Yolanda Muñoz, has assured that "the Port of Cartagena is consolidated as a port of departure for products from Cartagena and the Region bound for Europe, and specifically in the case of glycerin to the Netherlands" as It was possible to verify last week when the Lessow Swan oil tanker, under the Danish flag and consigned by Berg Mar tima, loaded 1,100 tons of glycerine at the South pier of the Escombreras dock.

Muñoz explained that "in this year 2020, glycerin exports have increased by 27,000 tons, doubling the 2019 figures, with more than 11,000 tons" and highlighted "some figures that continue to consolidate the Port of Cartagena as a benchmark for liquid bulk, placing us as the fourth most important port at the national level and among the 25 ports that grow the most in Europe.

" Worldwide, ports move about 950,000 tons of glycerin annually in the United States and Europe.

Liquid bulk accounts for 75 percent of the traffic volume moved by the Port of Cartagena.

In 2020, liquid bulk traffic stood at more than 25.2 million tons, figures very similar to 2019 despite the drop in fuel and diesel consumption as a result of the health crisis.

Glycerin has a wide range of uses in the food industry and in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.

Due to its sweetness, it can be used as a sweetener in drinks.

In addition, it can act as a humectant, that is, a substance that absorbs and retains moisture from the surroundings.

This is very useful when used in baked goods, as it helps to keep them fresh.

The mentioned properties also make glycerin useful in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.
